Charles McPherson - Today's Man [24/48 vinyl rip]
A great document of the more soulful shift made by Charles McPherson in the 70s – and an album that features his moody alto work set amidst a slightly larger group – filled with great players that include Chris Woods on flute, Richard Williams and Cecil Bridewater on trumpet, Frank Wess on tenor sax, Garnett Brown on trombone, and Barry Harris on piano. The tracks are deceptively easygoing, but swing with a nice spiritual soul jazz undercurrent – and McPherson blows in some warm, open modes that really grab us on the best tunes. Includes a great version of "Naima", plus the tracks "Bell Bottoms", "Cheryl", "Invitation", and "Charisma". © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

ReplyDeleteWow! This was well off my radar! Many thanks KC.
ReplyDeleteYes, What a Fantastic Upgrade! for me too, Thanks KC
ReplyDeleteMcPherson and Roach, respectively, in time for the weekend! About a year or so ago McPherson appeared on a fundraising break for one of the local PBS stations in the D. C. area. He's more than halfway through his eightieth decade and looked great. He was smaller in stature than I, who have never seen him live, thought he'd be. For some reason and despite the number of times I have been way off-base, I always assume big talents have bodies proportional to their abilities. He was also modest. McPherson's one of my favorites and I don't have enough of his music so I greatly appreciate this post.
ReplyDeletethanks for this one.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
ReplyDeleteGreat share, KingCake. Thanks so much for this rarity.
ReplyDeletenever seen this... thanks a lot for the chance to hear it, KC!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the share. Charles McPherson was once a neighbor of mine, and has always been a big favorite going back to his days with Mingus. I was completely unfamiliar with this session. However, the titles don't seem to match the tunes here. 1. Charisma seems to be right. But 2. Naima is actually Invitation. 3. Invitation is really Naima. 5. Cheryl is clearly Stranger in Paradise, and 6. is clearly actually Cheryl. So, by process of elimination, I believe that 4. is Bell Bottoms.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct! The inside gatefold and the rear cover are completely different and at the time I was labeling the tracks I used the rear cover - by the time I was reviewing for sound check, I wasn't looking at titles only listening - even so I remember thinking something was amiss, but I got interrupted and forgot about it - your track renaming is all spot on and matches the labels and gatefold
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for this McPherson with the great Barry Harris!
ReplyDeleteFound this looking for Barry Harris - what a treat! Thank you KC!
