Sean Jones - Gemini (2005)

Trumpeter Sean Jones certainly covers a great deal of musical ground on Gemini. The music ranges from the hard boppish "In Her Honor," a hint of 1960s lyrical Freddie Hubbard on "Rain of Patience," and the medium-tempo "Blues for Matt B." to some more electronic, funky, and even fusionish selections. The music on Gemini keeps one guessing throughout and Jones plays well in every setting. The other soloists, which at various times include Tim Fuller on alto and flute, the tenors of Ron Blake and Walter Smith III, trombonist Andre Hayward, and pianist Mulgrew Miller among others, are utilized to their best advantage, but it is the warm sound and versatility of Jones that makes Gemini a consistent success. ~ by Scott Yanow, AMG.

Superb: Sean Jones' tone, intonation and musicality are stellar. On this CD, the material is interesting and appealing, the other musicians are outstanding and Jones is great. The bop and funkier tracks blend well. The uses of synth keyboard on a few tracks is tasteful and adds to rather than detracting from the overall sound and musical quality. This is a CD I have found myself listening to every day, and I am sure I will be enjoying this for years. IMO, one of the best jazz CDs in recent years. ~ Kindle Customer, Amazon.com.

Uri Caine - Sphere Music (1992)

Uri Caine's debut, 1992's Sphere Music, introduces his kaleidoscopic take on jazz, coloring it with classical and Yiddish influences. Along with clarinetist Don Byron, Caine rejuvenates Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" with an ambitious, fluid grace, while the brash "Jelly" hints at his avant-jazz leanings. An eclectic tour through different musical moods and styles, Sphere Music is an engaging, promising first work. ~ by Heather Phares, AMG.

Carla Cook - Simply Natural (2002)

"Simply Natural." The song's title describes what Carla Cook is all about and what makes her such a thrilling vocalist. She's genuine. Both her scat singing and her lyric interpretations result in a relaxed atmosphere where everyone can sit back and enjoy being a part of it. Accompanists Bruce Barth and Cyrus Chestnut are in fine form. The program's song selection offers a wide variety that allows Cook's natural beauty to shine through. She's crossed generations by combining classics such as "Tulip or Turnip" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" with "Scarborough Fair," "Watermelon Man" and Oscar Brown Jr.'s "Strong Man." The combination of scat singing with soulful lyric interpretations makes Cook's natural delivery take control. I find this album atop my ten-best list for the year. Must a jazz singer scat? I think so. It's like asking, "Should a jazz singer use E-flat, E, F, F-sharp and G?" Carla Cook sings accurately, with a natural swing, and creatively. What places her session above most others, is the natural manner she brings to the performance. This is straight-ahead jazz that everyone can turn to when they need to hear a friendly smile. ~ by Jim Santella, AAJ.
