Jonah Jones Quartet - And Now In Person (1963) [vinyl]

Trumpeter Jonah Jones became famous during 1956-57 performing nightly before dancing crowds at the Embers. In 1963, after a long string of albums, he finally had the opportunity to record live. Cut in Los Angeles at the Crescendo, Jones, pianist Andre Persiany, bassist John Brown and drummer Danny Farrar swing their way through nine standards, most of which Jones had recorded before. Such tunes as "It's All Right With Me," "From This Moment On," "Undecided" and "Lullaby of Birdland" receive melodic and shuffling treatment from this very popular (and now underrated) group. ASTROLOGY, the study of the signs of the Zodiac. How does one rationalize a development with astrological significance? RICK HOLMES, the creator of the narrative indigenous to the artistic creativeness formed in this recording, is a person whose day-to-day behavioral continuity by his own concepts of the influence of the activities of astrological movement. Mr. Holmes, well known in the greater Los Angeles area, is a radio personality who is recognised by various people who have the privilege of being exposed to "RICK'S FAMILY AFFAIR" aired nightly on radio station KBCA-FM. (One of the most important outlets for Jazz and other musical expression, including sophisticated rhetoric, in Southern California.) Devoted listeners to Rick's program are well aware of his expertise with regards to astrology. While Cannonball Adderley is a fine and well-known alto saxophonist, his equal partner on Live Session!, vocalist Ernie Andrews, is a more obscure figure.  Andrews recorded frequently during the late '40s and throughout the '50s, but retained a lower profile during the '60s.  That's one reason why Live Session!, recorded in 1964, is such a special work.  Backed by Adderley, cornetist Nat Adderley, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes, Andrews' warm, rich vocals offer lovely interpretations of an even dozen songs.  The material cuts a wide swath across non-jazz genres, from the bluesy "Next Time I See You," to the popular "Since I Fell for You," to the fun nonsense of "Green Door."  Although the instrumental work takes a backseat to the vocals, both Adderleys find room to offer pithy solos that spice up the proceedings.  The accompaniment is an active one, too, with intricate piano and horns highlighting and underlining Andrews as needed.  Interestingly, the songs were recorded live on two different dates, two years apart.  The album nonetheless flows as a piece.   AllMusic Review by Ronnie D. Plas Johnson - This Must Be The Plas!

I have a couple of local thrift shops which I check semi regularily for LPs.  As luck would have it I found this little gem for a dollar, in excellent condition at that!!  This will be the first Plas Johnson post here at the Crypt, and I think it's a good one.

Johnson's career has been a storied one.  Originally from N'awlins, him and his brother Ray (RIP Mar/13) moved out west where they became first call session players.  Most notably, Plas was the main sax in Henry Mancini's band for the performance of the Pink Panther Theme.  Now who doesn't know that little ditty??!!?

Over the years Johnson released many great albums, also playing under the pseudonym Johnny Beecher.  "This Must Be The Place" is hardly a classic, but a solid soul jazz album to be sure.  Plas plays alto, tenor and bari on these tracks - all with his relaxed and swingin style.  The tunes are mostly standards with one original put together for the session, "S'il Vous Plait".  Overall we get a light swing with a laidback feel.  In my opinion, Plas Johnson excels at ballads.  I think his style is most convincing when playing this type of tune.  There's plenty of solos on every track, and he's joined by guitar, vibes, piano, organ, bass and drums.

Here's the problem folks...  I can't for the life of me find a definitive personnel list for this session.  The pianist is Paul Smith, we know this as he is mentioned in the liner notes.  Aside from that I can offer a few guess-timates (although his pianist was generally his brother Ray) based on the players he was playing with during this period.  Perhaps if any of you have an account at Tom Lord we can get an answer.  I will be sure to edit this post with the info!!

OK thanks to Daver88 we now have the session info, thanks alot my man.

Aside from that, we have a really great condition hunk of wax here!!  It cleaned up very nicely, but i would guess that it's previous owner was using a poorly aligned needle, or a blunted needle.  This creates the anomolies you hear around the sax.  I digress, overall its a great listen ripped at 24/44.1 wav and dithered to 16/44.1 FLAC.  Never released on CD as far as I can tell.  Pour yourself a scotch and chill the hell out y'all... enjoy!!!

Bobby Hackett And Jack Teagarden - Jazz Ultimate

A legendary session which features Hackett on trumpet rather than his usual cornet.  This would be on my top ten of mainstream/Chicago style all time greats.  A wonderful collective of improvisational players... hugely expressive.

My copy is minty, ripped at 24/44.1 wav and dithered to 16/44.1 FLAC.  Enjoy!!
