Andrea Brachfeld - Lady Of The Island (2011)

This is Andrea's 6th release on ZOHO music which was released in 2012. This is Andrea's first jazz release as she started moving back to her first love, jazz. The guest artists on this CD were Wallace Roney, Wycliffe Gordon, Todd Bashore, Yasek Manzano, Bill O' Connell and Chembo Corniel. It received rave reviews. ~ Andrea Brachfeld Bandcamp.

Lady of the Island is a wonderful mix of musical selections to be enjoyed by everyone from the studied musician to the casual listener. The tunes on this recording swing hard and groove hard, and are executed at the highest level of musicality and musicianship. To date, this may be the clearest representation of Andrea's expression through her music. Though she has varied tastes in musical approaches and stylistic interpretations, she is a hard bopper at heart, and this is obvious on this date. ~ Wycliffe Gordon, Cover Notes.

Makoto Ozone - Three Wishes (1998)

Makoto Ozone's style is clearly tinged with Oscar Peterson's influences, and even if we tend to find "plans" or sounds very close from one disc to another, this pianist remains a sure value as his sense of rhythm and the musicality of his phrasing take on the guts. ~ CedMlis, Amazon.com. Various Artists - Jazz For When You're Alone (1999)

The 32 Jazz label, under the leadership of Joel Dorn, continues to release compilations designed to fit a particular mood or state of being. Thus, there have been albums as Jazz for a Rainy Afternoon, Groove Jammy, and Songs That Made the Phone Light Up. Now we have an album dedicated to being alone, not loneliness as Dorn explains his liner notes. But with this play list, the line between the two gets really blurred. Whatever, this is a comprehensive collection of tracks by the top jazz luminaries for albums they cut for the now defunct Muse label and all of them are outstanding regardless of the mood you're in. The Sonny Stitt performance of "Sweet and Lovely" is one of the album's highlights as his sax works in, out, under, and through the piano of Duke Jordan and Sam Jones' bass. The credits list Stitt playing a soprano, but it's the alto he has in his hands for introspective blowing of this classic standard. Wallace Roney is the ostensible leader on "Lost." But his Miles Davis-like trumpet is subordinated to the classical oriented piano of Jacky Terrasson who penned this song. Donald Byrd, sounding even more like Miles than Roney, is united with Joe Henderson for a ruminative rendering of his "That's all There Is to Love." A memorable track is Houston Person's "Everything Happens to Me." Not only does Person's Ben Webster influenced tenor fit nicely with the tune's theme, but there's major soloing by Cecil Bridgewater's muted trumpet and the under recorded Stan Hope piano. The quintessential "alone" song, Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight," has been assigned to major electric guitar improviser Larry Coryell who gets considerable assistance along the way from Stanley Cowell's piano. Phil Woods creates a vision of a summer ending with "The Summer Knows" as his engages in musical discussion with bass player Richard Davis. Woods, and all the other artists on this album, are in fine fettle resulting in another superior compilation from jazz impresario Dorn's 32Jazz label.

Donald Harrison - The Power Of Cool (1994)

"Impressive...gifted..a debt of both jazz and rock...Mr. Harrison has mastered all the signs of soul," ~ Peter Watrous, N.Y. Times.

"Revitalizing.. Donald Harrison, an alto saxophonist from New Orleans, has established himself. Mr. Harrison has taken the rhythm of the street and overlaid it with his favorite modernist harmonies. ~ John Pareles, N.Y. Times.

This guy is absolutely awesome! I searched forever trying to find out who this artist is. I always heard "Tropic of Cool" on the radio, but the disc jockey never gave the name of the song or artist info-it drove me nuts! Please, just listen to this one song and you'll be a fan for life!!!!!!!!! ~ Amazon Customer.

Geri Allen - Timeless Portraits And Dreams (2006)

Geri Allen's musical interests prove to be quite diverse in Timeless Portraits and Dreams, delving into jazz, spirituals, sacred works and originals, accompanied by two of the most in-demand veterans, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jimmy Cobb, throughout most of the release. Allen's stunning solo opener "Oh Freedom" segues directly into another fine work, "Melchezedek," which showcases both Allen and Carter in the solo spotlight, with wordless vocals by the Atlanta Jazz Chorus adding background color. Singer Carmen Lundy and the chorus are on hand for the spirit-filled "Well Done" and Allen's gorgeous ballad "Timeless Portraits and Dreams." Other vocal tracks include two features for tenor George Shirley, including "I Have a Dream" (from Mary Lou's Mass composed by Mary Lou Williams after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) and a vigorous treatment of the piece considered as the Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Trumpeter Wallace Roney (Allen's husband) smolders in Allen's tasty post-bop vehicle "In Real Time" and makes a belated entrance in the tense, strident tribute "Our Lady (For Billie Holiday)." Allen throws the listener a curve with her well-disguised introduction to the trio arrangement of Charlie Parker's "Ah-Leu-Cha" and uncovers a neglected gem in Lil Hardin Armstrong's ballad "Just for a Thrill." While some jazz fans may prefer to hear Geri Allen in a strictly instrumental setting, they will miss out if they fail to investigate these stimulating sessions. Highly recommended. ~ by Ken Dryden, AMG.

Wallace Roney - No Job Too Big Or Small (1999)

32 Jazz/Savoy's No Job Too Big or Small contains 11 highlights (as chosen by producer Adam Dorn) from Wallace Roney's recordings for Muse in the late '80s and early '90s. Although these were made at the outset of his career, Roney was already at the top of his game, as evidenced by this highly enjoyable collection. While the original albums are certainly worth hearing themselves, this is an excellent introduction to the trumpeter's finest recordings. ~ by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG.

Geri Allen - Eyes... In The Back Of Your Head (1997)

This is possibly pianist Geri Allen's most advanced release. Always a pianist with her own voice, the increasingly original Allen performs three atmospheric piano solos, including a version of Ron Carter's "Little Waltz," during which she adds a little bit of synthesizer. There is a duet with percussionist Cyro Baptista, two duets with altoist Ornette Coleman (who through the years has almost never recorded as a sideman), and four numbers in which Allen is joined by her husband trumpeter Wallace Roney (two of which also include Baptista). Except for the Ornette pieces, Allen is the dominant force throughout the intriguing set, which includes the very haunting "Windows to the Soul" (dedicated to the recently departed drummer Tony Williams). The music is mostly avant-garde, but purposeful and logical in its own fashion. Well worth several listens. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG.
