Jesper Lundgaard Trio feat. Enrico Pieranunzi, Alex Riel - 60 Out Of Shape (2015)

Bassist Jesper Lundgaaard is one of the veterans of the Danish "bass monarchy", where Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen is the one who will forever reign at the top. On June 12 and 13 last year, he was on stage at Jazzhus Montmartre in Store Regnegade in Copenhagen, together with drummer Alex Riel (another person who has influenced Danish jazz life since the early 60s), and Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi (Italy's leading jazz pianist for the past 20 years). And from these two concerts, this brilliant recording of familiar standards is now available. It opens with "Autumn Leaves", before we get "All The Things You Are", "I Can't Get Started", "My Funny Valentine" and "What Is This Thing Called Love" in a medley with "Everything I Love" and "'Round Midnight", before the three go in for landing with Sonny Rollins' fine "Oleo". Trio music from the top shelf is served throughout. Pieranunzi is a brilliant interpreter of these standards, and with a following like Lundgaard and Riel, you can hardly go wrong. All the songs have nice dynamics, and you can hear that the musicians are having two good nights in Montmartre. In the cover text, journalist Peter H. Larsen asks the question of whether there is any difference between European and American jazz, in a nice little essay. I'm not so sure if we get any answers through this album, but one thing is certain, and that is that these three gentlemen in their prime, deliver jazz music that is very close to the "American model". And there are few, if any trios "over there" who do this better than the Italian and the two Danes. ~ Jan Granlie, salt-peanuts.eu. [Translated From Norwegian]

Ada Montellanico, Enrico Pieranunzi - Danza Di Una Ninfa (2005)

Two great artists leading an exceptional ensemble to present a project that will not fail to amaze and fascinate jazz and non-jazz fans. Ada Montellanico and Enrico Pieranunzi have, in fact, created a new work for the EGEA label that is a real journey into the poetic-musical world of Luigi Tenco. It is difficult to imagine a more effective combination to face and carry out such a delicate operation as that of giving life to new original sound stories through the exciting stories contained in the beautiful music and lyrics of the singer-songwriter. The two artists who signed "Dance of a Nymph" have brilliantly succeeded in the undertaking thanks to the excellent qualities that have long been recognized to them. Ada Montellanico has carved out her own, important space in the vocal panorama for making the Italian language sound and jazz improvisation and for being an interpreter capable of making her intimate emotional world adhere to the needs of narration. Enrico Pieranunzi, for his part, has built over the years, through his improvisations and compositions, a very personal sound universe that has made him one of the most appreciated Italian musicians in the world. If it is true that the Montellanico / Pieranunzi collaboration has already produced important works in the past such as "L'altra Tenco" (1996) and "But love no" (1997), it must be said immediately that "Dance of a nymph" presents itself as a completely new project, in a certain sense "revolutionary" because in it the most refined Italian songwriting tradition blends with the most authentic and transgressive jazz; so famous compositions such as, for example, "I fell in love with you" and "I understood that I love you" thanks to Pieranunzi's surprising, "transversal" arrangements and Montellanico's passionate, highly original interpretative approach, they will be completely "unpublished".

But, speaking of "unpublished", four truly special songs can be heard on the CD that cannot fail to impress with their great beauty and poetic force. There are four texts by Luigi Tenco - two of which set to music by Montellanico, two by Pieranunzi - whose recording constitutes an "event within an event" because never before have the songwriter's lyrics been set to music, an operation that has the other received the warm consent and support of the Tenco family. And the fact that two jazz musicians did all this has a particular flavor, taking into account the enormous importance that this music had in the formative years of the future author of so many wonderful songs. Naturally the extraordinary artistic results of the project would not have been possible without the decisive contribution of the musicians who participated in it, each of whom enriched the CD with his strong expressive personality with an exceptional guest, the prestigious American multi-instrumentalist Paul McCandless, for some time strong point of the legendary "Oregon". A project therefore that constitutes for various reasons an important and rare opportunity also and above all for the subtle interplay between the two artists who created it: a sort of seductive interplay, thanks to which Montellanico makes the word "Sound" and Pieranunzi transforms his sound into "word". But mainly, it will be possible to rediscover the immense originality and depth of Luigi Tenco, one of the most important artists ever to appear on the Italian music scene, in a completely new and unexpected guise. ~ enricopieranunzi.it [Translated from Italian]

Enrico Pieranunzi with Simona Severini - My Songbook (2016)

The renowned Italian pianist has worked wonders on this captivating album and has shown himself to be a genius songwriter with deft technique and a restless imagination. The album contains eleven of Pieranunzi's own compositions, music and lyrics that flow effortlessly thanks to acclaimed vocalist Simone Severini, who exudes an amazing sensuality and pairs well with her expressive voice. Pieranunzi and Severini began collaborating in 2012 on the occasion of the recording of a tribute to Lucio Dalla and have continued to work together ever since. The compositions are skillfully arranged by Pieranunzi in various forms, from duet to sextet, with an amazing range of expression demonstrating the quality of the involved musicians among Italy's most famous jazz artists (Luca Bulgarelli, Nicola Angelucci and two guests Rosario Giuliani and Francesco Lento). "My Songbook" is an engaging listening experience with lyrical eloquence. ~ Via Veneto Jazz.

Enrico Pieranunzi, Enzo Pietropaoli, Roberto Gatto - Moon Pie (1987)

Here we have an early trio grouping of Italian piano/keyboardist Enrico Pieranunzi joined by compatriots, bassist Enzo Pietropaolo and drummer Roberto Gatto. Recorded in mid-1987, at a time when jazz fusion was evolving and it's no surprise that this trio portrays their ability to adapt to the times. As a result, the band favours utilising the modern sounds of electric piano, synthesizer on Enrico's part but also the inclusion of electric guitar and bass by Enzo with Roberto's dynamism matching in. The twelve tunes found on this album are composed and split equally amongst both Enrico and Enzo. Many recent Enrico Pieranunzi fans will be initially confused as to what's happened to Enrico's normal classic acoustic trio formation. All the compositions are relatively short, the longest being just three a half minutes, but don't be put off because these musicians are masters of their individual instruments and can easily adapt and improvise with the ability to play all styles of jazz. Listeners will be enthralled by the sonic range of the tunes, being swept along by the power of musicianship of the group leaving them with an experience and journey of pure entertainment, something that can be enjoyed over and over.

Phil Woods & Space Jazz Trio - Phil's Mood (1990)

Phil Woods has made many fine recordings for Philology, the Italian label named in his honor, and this one is no exception. He's backed by the Space Jazz Trio, anchored by the fine pianist Enrico Pieranunzi (who wrote nine of the 11 compositions heard here) and also featuring bassist Enzo Pietropaoli (who contributed the two takes of "Upstairs") and drummer Alfred Kramer. Woods' potent alto brings out the best in the pianist's strong post-bop charts, especially the driving "New Lands," the lyrical ballad "Chet," and the bittersweet waltz "Hindsight," which features Woods' hypnotic clarinet. ~ by Ken Dryden, Amazon.com.

Enrico Pieranunzi Trio - Multiple Choice, Vol. 6 (2000)

Multiple Choice is now the 6th CD that Enrico Pieranunzi and his trio present on yvp. And again, it is a prime example of interactive music-making at the highest level! Pieranunzi has chosen two exquisite companions: The Genoa-born bassist Piero Leveratto has been working with Pieranunzi for over ten years and has proven himself here as a sensitive companion and highly virtuoso soloist alike. Drummer Marcello Di Leonardo is a new addition, whose sensitive playing provides the right basis for the master's pianistic excursions. The title "Multiple Choice" expresses the intention of the trio on this CD. Bill Evans, Pieranunzi's great teacher, once said that jazz asks "how" and not "what".And so the Enrico Pieranunzi Trio did not set a fixed musical language for this recording, but set the goal of playing the most open and best music that the three of them are capable of. And so, according to the title "Multiple Choice", there is modal jazz next to free forms, melodic ballads next to Latin-influenced numbers, all held together by a common musical language. ~ enricopieranunzi.it. Here's a unique CD; a compilation of compositions by the then working Enrico Pieranunzi Trio in 2000, recorded in Switzerland and produced by Radio DRS 2. The disc comprises of 16 tracks, the majority of them penned by Enrico himself. For his latest trio formation, he brings together bassist Piero Leveratto and drummer Marcello Di Leonardo. As per usual Enrico weaves his magic and truly asserts his authority as a master pianist and composer of modern jazz. Regardless of his continental background he is revered throughout the world and it's not an overstatement to say that all his works are of the highest quality bringing joy to many an older or newer jazz audience/s.

Enrico Pieranunzi, Marc Johnson, Joey Baron - Current Conditions (2003)

More tunes from the Pieranunzi-Johnson-Baron trio, to caress your ears. The trio's magic hits home again and heads straight for your soul, tickling it with new original compositions by Enrico, Marc, and Joey. Pure pleasure.

I once described Thelonious Monk's original recording of 'Ruby My Dear' as 'sentiment without sentimentality'. Enrico Pieranunzi's playing and compositions have that same quality in their own way. No doubt he is both a romantic and a deep thinker. The combination of heart and mind is a most valuable amalgam in any art form. The blend is mixed differently by each individual. Pieranunzi's is a heady brew whose aromatic essences draw you in. They make you think. More so, they make you feel." ~ Ira Gitler, CamJazz.com.

Enrico Pieranunzi Quintet - Don't Forget The Poet (1999)

Heard in solo and trio sessions prior, here's a quintet recording for pianist/composer Pieranunzi that reflects the Euro-landscape ECM sound so familiar to fans of Keith Jarrett, but especially to Kenny Wheeler enthusiasts. Bert Joris on trumpet and flugelhorn is largely responsible for this sound, but saxophonist Stefano d'Anna mixes and matches every brassy move with his own serene musings. Bassist Hein Van de Geyn is more present as the producer of the date than as a bassist, while drummer Hans von Oosterhout rounds out this rather together ensemble. Of these 11 pieces penned by the leader, two are influenced by samba. Wheeler's lyricism with d'Anna's soprano identifies "Persona," and a hotter rhythm sets up a repeated simple-song motif with d'Anna's tenor on "Child of the Real & Ideal." There are several waltzes: the sweet "Coralie" perfectly marries tenor and flugelhorn; "Time's Passage" goes more soulful and slightly contemplative; "A Nameless Gate" is easygoing and most Wheeler-like; and "Hindsight" has "Cry Me a River" underpinnings. The best swinger is the boppish "Newsbreak" with distinct but loose bass inferences. Joris really shines as an individualist on flugelhorn for the ballad "With a Song in My Heart," as well as on trumpet for the two-note accents and slightly overblown solo during "It Speaks for Itself." Most reflective of its name, the true-tone poem title track sports gossamer-thin, fragile thematic segments, mostly in a processional 6/8. The finale "Seaward" is deeper with minimalist piano, impressionistic soaring horns and bass, and the most European/ECM-like stance. This music no doubt emphasizes beauty over swing and tonal lyricism over blues connotations. It compacts improvisation within a natural, wooden framework, and overall, amounts to quite a pleasant effort. ~ by Michael G. Nastos, AMG.
