Archie Shepp - A Sea Of Faces (1975)

Although this performance from 1975 was known and appreciated by the then fans, some jazz critics, lamenting at the evolution of Shepp's music (thought to deviate from the royal road of politico-musical correctness), have failed to notice its remarkable qualities. While I agree with those connoisseurs that some details in this recording are less inspiring (Burrell's piano solo on "Hipnosis", Shepp's own piano playing on "I Know 'Bout The Life", etc.), such criticisms virtually fade into nothing when you allow yourself to be carried away by the 25 minute "Hipnosis" (Grachan Moncur's obsessive theme). It offers one of the darkest, most exciting and sweeping tenor sax explorations to be found on Shepp's recordings (along with "Yasmina A Black Woman" and the now untraceable "Coral Rock" from the late sixties), intense and devoid of clichés. This Millésime [Great Vintage] of Shepp may have become somewhat less acid, less fatty in the mouth and (whether you like it or not) more reconciled with tradition than the Impulse years' venturer. But the man is at the height of his powers here, not the captive of any one idiom but at home in many, including 'free'. Most of the time the music swings heavily and irresistibly. Shepp doesn't reduce his fellow musicians to the status of bystanders here. Bunny Foy is an excellent vocalist (on "Song For Mozambique" and "I Know 'Bout The Life"), Charles Greenlee takes an exciting trombone solo on "Hipnosis", Cameron Brown on bass is outstanding throughout. ~ by Paul Cortois, Amazon.com.

Barry Harris Quintet - Newer Than New (1961)

A quick listen to the lively bop on Newer Than New may enlist a perplexing question: Was this music really recorded 40 years ago? Apparently so, but the music still sounds fresh and exciting. If pianist Harris set out to show bop was still a vital force in 1961, he accomplished his task. Of course, he didn't do this alone. Trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer, alto Charles McPherson, bassist Ernie Farrow, and drummer Clifford Jarvis join him on eight tunes that would've made Parker and Gillespie proud. The influence of bop pioneers is evident on tunes like "The Last One" and "Anthropology," both giving the horns lots of room to soar against the backdrop of dynamic rhythm. "Mucho Dinero," one of several Harris originals, has an exuberant Latin feel. After the horns set the piece in motion, Harris takes the first solo, creating colorful textures with his keen sense of harmony. Newer Than New also places special emphasis on the young horn players, providing McPherson and Hillyer lots of room to show what they've got. Both echo Parker and Gillespie without copying them. Hillyer displays a fat rich tone on numbers like "Easy to Love," while McPherson's resonant pitch, no matter how quickly he's playing, always comes across. Farrow and Jarvis keep the shifting rhythms heavy in the mix, pushing each soloist to create something vital. The title Newer Than New perhaps mocks the obsession with the latest thing, as opposed to opting for the timelessness of high-octane improvising. Jazz styles, like all styles, come and go, but great music like Newer than New transcends styles. It's also fun (and illustrative) to listen to an album like this back-to-back with the latest retro jazz. Ernie Watts - Chariots Of Fire (1981)

Great album. Ernie's proficiency comes through on Chariots of Fire followed by other funk-jazz infused tracks, obviously with Quincy's production influence. A delightful listen overall! ~ Pa Colin, Amazon.com. 

On this album saxophonist Ernie Watts blows in all directions and can easily be considered one of the masterpieces of Qwest Records led by producer Quincy Jones. The theme was the title song composed by Vangelis for "Chariots of Fire" which won the Best Picture Award at the 54th Academy Awards, and arranged by Michael Omartian. Ernie is joined by some great musicians including: Keyboardists Richard Tee, Don Grusin, Greg Phillinganes; guitarists Steve Lukather, David E. Williams, bassist Neil Stubenhaus and drummer John Robinson to name a few. Overall, a disco-fusion flavoured sound that will entertain even the most discerning of listeners, Enjoy!

Aldo Romano - Because Of Bechet (2002)

Italian-born drummer Aldo Romano is a respected European jazz musician who has played with many avant-garde and contemporary jazz stars. Living in France from his early teens, his music usually is a mix of Italian emotionalism and French sentimentality, influenced by world leading avant-garde jazz artists of the 60s and 70s. "Because Of Bechet" is quite a radical step in his musical career - this album is a tribute to American jazz sax/clarinet star Sidney Bechet. Full of tunes and straightforward jazz compositions, this album isn't just a nostalgic retrospective. Aldo also uses sampling and electronic rhythms plus organ as well as more traditional instruments to give this music, which is deeply rooted in jazz from the 20-30s, a new interpretation. Three Wishes

David Murray Octet - Picasso (1993)

Picasso is an album by the David Murray Octet, released on the Japanese DIW label in 1993. It features performances by Murray, Rasul Siddik, Hugh Ragin, Craig Harris, James Spaulding, Dave Burrell, Wilber Morris and Tani Tabbal. "Picasso Suite" is a tribute to both Pablo Picasso and Coleman Hawkins's tribute to Picasso. It was written for the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society and the Cleveland Museum of Art. ~ Wiki. 

The title suite is a lively, mostly up-tempo composition where the five brass players more often play with each other than try to outshine each other with solos. While it apparently is an arranged piece of music, it sounds fresh and often spontaneous. It is worth the record alone. ~ R.Walsh, AMG.

Dado Moroni - Jazz Piano (1979) [vinyl]

Edgardo Dado Moroni, born in Genoa, Italy on October 20, 1962, was exposed to jazz music very early, thanks to his parents’ record collection and he started playing piano at age 4. Basically, self-taught, Fats Waller, Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum and Erroll Garner were his very first influences and Dado tried to learn their solos by ear until, at age 11, he met local pianist Flavio Crivelli who gave him a more formal training, also introducing him to the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and more contemporary pianists such as Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner. From age 14 Dado started playing professionally all throughout Italy with some of the most important Italian players like Franco Cerri, Tullio De Piscopo, Luciano Milanese, Gianni Basso, Sergio Fanni and Massimo Urbani and at 17 he recorded his first album in trio with Tullio De Piscopo and American bassist Julius Farmer.

Jack McDuff - Another Real Good'Un (1990)

Another Real Good 'Un is a latter-day Brother Jack McDuff session which finds the organist joined by tenor legend Houston Person, as well as (at various times) alto/tenor saxophonist Ron Bridgewater, trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, drummers Buddy Williams and Cecil Brooks III, and guitarists Randy Johnston and John Hart. It's one of McDuff's better comeback albums, as he keeps the groove pumping throughout the record, swinging soulfully and interacting nicely with the other soloists. 32 Jazz reissued the session in 1999, Savoy Jazz in 2003. ~ by Steve Huey, AMG.

Ernie Watts - Sanctuary (1986)

This Qwest project was a typical crossover project for Ernie Watts, who recorded a series of commercial sets for Elektra and Qwest. The rhythms are danceable; Watts displays attractive tones on tenor, alto, and soprano; the supporting cast includes top L.A. studio musicians; Don Grusin contributes keyboards and electronic rhythms; among the many vocalists are Larry Williams and Phil Perry; and guitarist Lee Ritenour pops up on a few numbers. Ernie Watts would soon start recording more creative jazz and start to realize his potential, which is largely wasted on this effort. ~ by Scott Yanow, AMG.

Ernie Watts Quartet - Oasis (2011)

A dictionary definition of "Oasis" cites: "something serving as a refuge, relief, or pleasant change from that which is usual, annoying, or difficult." In our modern world, all three of these last-mentioned can be frequent. For Ernie Watts, music has been an oasis his whole life. One way he immerses himself in this oasis is by using his spirit, his heart, and his deep knowledge of jazz to write music. Another is of course to play his horn, in wordless conversation with other musicians or communing with just his instrument alone in a room (which often produces new music from him.) After years of being heard primarily in commercial settings, Ernie Watts finally had an opportunity to record exactly what he wanted as a leader on this JVC CD. Watts, in a quartet with pianist Pat Coil, bassist Joel DiBartolo and drummer Bob Leatherbarrow, features his Coltrane-influenced tenor and a bit of alto and soprano on some group originals and standards (including "My One and Only Love" "Skylark" and "Body and Soul"). Ernie Watts is the finest sax player of the 21st Century

The combination of Watts and Coil is absolutely fantastic. The ballads are intricate, complex, delicate, and soulful, with plenty of Wattsian originality and deep feeling. The rough, hard core bop stuff would put Coltrane on his knees, begging for mercy. This CD is absolutely delicious, and dripping with enthusiasm, soul, and commitment. This may be the finest jazz CD ever recorded, and now you know why it is perpetually "out of stock". There are 11 tracks here and you can go nuts trying to figure out which ones are the best. It is amazing. It sells for 9.95 but it's absolutely priceless. Be sure also to listen to Ernie Watts on Charlie Haden's exquisite "Haunted Heart" and "Now is the hour" CD's.
