Chico Hamilton - Chic, Chic, Chico! (1965) {vinyl]

For this interesting LP, drummer Chico Hamilton is mostly heard with an octet of Los Angeles musicians. The group, comprised of trumpet/trombone/tenor man Harold Land, French horn/flute (or piccolo) player and guitarist Gabor Szabo, bassist Albert Stinson, and the drummer/leader, performs originals by Hamilton and Szabo, plus "What's New." The concise performances (which are often tightly arranged) are full of subtleties and fine playing, particularly from the guitarist. The title cut was recorded two months later and is the last recording by Chico Hamilton with his star sideman Charles Lloyd, who is heard on flute. Not essential, but this album has its strong moments.

Harold Land - A New Shade of Blue (1971) [vinyl]

A lost chapter in the legendary Harold Land/Bobby Hutcherson relationship – and a record that often gets overlooked. The set is a great moody mellow bit of jazz funk, recorded with Buster Williams on bass, Bill Henderson on electric piano, and Billy Hart on drums. Mtume sits in on congas, and the tracks have a very soulful groove that's different than the duo's work on Blue Note, but which also has the same sense of funkiness. Titles include "Mtume", "Ode To Angela", and "De-Liberation". © 1996-2012, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

Well not my idea of jazz-funk, this is straight ahead jazz and a logical development from the previous Blue Notes!

The Best Of Max Roach And Clifford Brown In Concert [vinyl rip-flac]

"This set has the earliest documented performances of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. Trumpeter Brown and drummer Roach, along with tenor-saxophonist Teddy Edwards, pianist Carl Perkins and bassist George Bledsoe, perform four numbers including hot versions of "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" and Edwards's "Sunset Eyes." In addition there is a later set with the permanent lineup of the Quintet: Brown, Roach, tenorman Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell and bassist George Morrow. Together they play "Jordu," Brown's feature on "I Can't Get Started" and versions of "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "Parisian Thoroughfare" that are both heated and colorful. This is a very rewarding and somewhat historic release of high-quality straightahead jazz from one of the great hard bop bands." AMG

Harold Land - Choma (Burn) (1972) [vinyl]

The oddest of the Hutcherson-Land albums, at times driving mainstream post-bop, as expected, at times 70s jazz-funk fusion, perhaps the influence of Land's son? Personally I'd have preferred more subtlety and indeed suppleness from the drumming but overall there's much to enjoy here if, like me, your a devotee of these two.
