Horace Silver Quintet - Doin' The Thing [At The Village Gate] (1961)

This live set (recorded at the Village Gate) finds pianist/composer Horace Silver and his most acclaimed quintet (the one with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor and drummer Roy Brooks) stretching out on four selections, including his new song "Filthy McNasty." Two shorter performances were added to the CD version of this enjoyable and always funky hard bop session. ~ by Scott Yanow, AMG.

Furious live set that swings insanely hard. And I mean really, really hard. Silver's quartet at this time included Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Junior Cook (tenor sax), Gene Taylor (bass) and Roy Brooks (drums) and everyone but Brooks had been playing together since 1958 (he joined September 1959). Their dynamic chemistry is apparent within the first minute of "Filthy McNasty" and the energy level is just off the scale. These Guys Really Know How To Swing. Highlights? The whole damn album is a highlight. No wussy-pussy ballads or standards to be found, just four really great Silver originals. "Kiss Me Right" is the slowest thing on here and it's still pretty fast. The sound quality is decent for a live recording, the remastered CD may have cleaned that up. The extended applause after "Filthy" shows that the audience was at least somewhat aware that they were witnessing something special that night. ~ Extract by coolidge, rateyourmusic.com.

Shirley Scott - Sweet Soul (1962) [re-rip]

Reissued from the "Happy Talk" session this features Earl May on bass and Roy Brooks on drums. It includes a nice "Jitterbug Waltz." All are standards. ~ by Michael G. Nastos, AMG.

Here we have another overlooked classic by the ‘Queen of the Organ’. On this date she keeps her trio’s focus on a number of classic jazz standards. Her performance and skills are exceptional and backed perfectly by other veterans; Earl May on bass and Roy Brooks on drums. This album recorded by Rudy van Gelder was to be the 2nd release of this brilliant LP. The previous being Happy Talk [Prestige PR 7262]

Shirley Scott - Drag 'Em Out (1963) [re-rip]

And Drag 'Em Out she does - on this, one of Shirley's best albums for Prestige! The set really cooks on side one – which is an extended album-side jam called "Drag Em Out", played by Shirley on organ, with Roy Brooks on drums and Major Holley on bass. This sort of long open track is quite different than Shirley's other recordings, and she really rises to meet the challenge. Side two is more standard stuff - 3 tunes, with titles that include "The Song Is Ended", "Out Of It", and "The Second Time Around". © Dusty Groove America, Inc.

Shirley Scott - Now's The Time (1967) [vinyl>flac]

Now's the Time is an album by organist Shirley Scott compiling several tracks recorded between 1958 and 1964 and released on the Prestige label in 1967. "This is early Scott, several takes from different sessions for this Prestige release", Allmusic.

Yes once upon a time jazz was a man's world but with gals like Shirley Scott around some of the cats are beginning to get inferiority complexes. Like isn't a woman’s place in the kitchen! Not when she happens to be Shirley Scott. Her latest cooking is done on a Hammond, not a stove. ~ Extract from Liner Notes by Mark Gardner.
