“The Echoes of Three” is a 2015 jazz album by the Japanese pianist Mayuko Katakura. It is a piano trio session recorded in New York that features her reunion with former classmates from The Juilliard School, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Carmen Intorre. The album features six of Katakura's original compositions and interpretations of three jazz standards, one penned by Eric Dolphy, Wayne Shorter and Duke Pearson. She is noted for a balance of compositional planning and in-the-moment improvisation. Her style on the album has been described as incorporating elements of McCoy Tyner's angularity and Thelonious Monk's spontaneity. The album includes original tracks and covers of works by other jazz musicians. "Into Somewhere" originally, based on "Out Of Nowhere"; "At The Studio [Reunion]” is a group improvisation; "Directions" honors influences stemming from Mulgrew Miller and Geri Allen and "A Barfly's Hope" an original written for pianist Elmo Hope.
