The Music Of Hoagy
Carmichael
The idea for an interesting,
hit album is usually simple: collect popular and known standards, select
perfect musicians and the “top of the hits” session is ready. This time the
protagonist of the recording "I Get Along With You Very Well"
is not only by the outstanding American composer Hoagy Carmichael, but Tony
Lakatos - a Hungarian saxophonist and composer, one of the most eminent
European jazz musicians who has made an unprecedented appearance on the world
music market. A perfectly educated violinist (!) and saxophonist began his jazz
career by winning the prestigious jazz competition in 1977 and the Bela Bartok
Conservatory index. In 1981 he moved to Germany in order - like other jazz
emigrants from Eastern Europe - to appear on the European jazz scene. Excellent
reviews of concerts have allowed the Hungarian musician to appear among the
most outstanding jazz groups. Over 150 recorded albums and participation in
bands of Al Foster, Anthony Jackson, Kirk Lightsey, Joanne Bracken, Cecil
McBee, George Mraz, Trikol Gurtu, Randy Brecker, Alex Acun, Charlie Mariano ...
This time Tony Lakatos realized "I Get Along With You Very Well"
- a standards project and chose the best studio in Brooklyn, New York, Systems
Two as the venue for the session. Lakatos invited bassists (George Mraz and Tim
Lefebvre) and drummer Adam Nussbaum to record famous compositions by an
American composer Hoagy Carmichael. Excellent versions of "Georgia On
My Mind", "Skylark", "April In My Heart",
"I Get Along Without You Very Well" enriched with suggestive
interpretations of the legendary vocalist Jimmy Scott (unique and timeless
versions of "The Nearness Of You", "Stardust"
and "Skylark") create a small jazz masterpiece from a project
by Tony Lakatos. ~ Extract by Dionizy Piatkowski, jazz.pl.
