Furio Di Castri - Unknown Voyage (1988, 2000)

Recorded in 1988, originally released by the label A Tempo, Unknown Voyage it is a very significant work. The musical result is particularly remarkable for the level of the band here presented and for the compositions, all originals by Furio Di Castri. A recording that is a perfect example of the possibility to be in the mainstream and at the same time to be modern and original. Music built around a clear compositional project. Joe Lovano, Paul Motian, Franco D'Andrea and Furio Di Castri, a real jazz all-stars band, give life to a music in perfect balance between the written parts and the improvised ones with rare technical and expressive skills. ~ italianjazz.bandcamp.com.

Enrico Pieranunzi - In That Dawn Of Music (1990-93)

A marvelous compilation of works by Enrico Pieranunzi spanning the years 1990 till 1993. All tracks are taken from live dates spread across venues in Denmark, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. As a result, he is accompanied by unique players from those countries whilst on tour. Many of these groupings have appeared on some of his Soul Note records from this period, but like other ‘giveaways’ by the Musica Jazz magazine these tracks have been compiled from unreleased ‘live’ recordings. So many thanks to that magazine for promoting and perpetuating another fantastic resource for Jazz Lovers throughout the world.

Mose Allison - I Love The Life I Live (1960) [vinyl, mono>flac]

Here’s my tribute to a great musician, singer & composer.

Recorded In the mid-1960, this Mose's second album with Columbia Records, captures the artist and his trio as he develops as a pianist, vocalist and composer. With signature passion and prowess, Mose Allison has created another ripe with personality. Known for his work on the trumpet as well as the piano Mose has played with the likes of Stan Getz and Zoot Sims among others as he has spread his own version of blues inflected jazz across the land. Sticking to the piano on this outing Mose sings and plays a few of his own compositions and a nice selection of other works. His piano presence is light and tasty and the blend of the trio sounds just right ever changing directions from song to song as Mose follows his muse.

When this album was recorded in 1960, this laconic Mississippian wasn't the brilliant lyricist he would later become. But he had great taste. The title track, written by Willie Dixon, sure sounds like a Mose song; "Fool's Paradise" is another gem. Mose's four tunes are instrumentals. The production by Teo Macero makes it feel like you're perched on one end of the piano bench. ~ by Mark Allan, AMG.
