Paolo Fresu Quintet - Ballads (1991)

While it's true that trumpeter and composer Paolo Fresu works in a variety of settings from trio to sextet, it is arguable that his quintets present him with the finest opportunities for creative expression. This date, a covers-only collection of ballads by Ellington and Strayhorn, Mingus, Monk, Johnny Mercer, etc., has all the hallmarks of a classic Fresu set. For starters, the band is amazing: Tino Tracanna on tenor, Roberto Cipelli on piano, Attilio Zanchi on bass, and Ettore Fioravanti on drums offer Fresu a wide palette for expressing the many shades and textures of the jazz ballad. Then, there's the material. Beginning a ballad program with the quietly gorgeous "When Sunny Gets Blue" is auspicious, especially when the opening measures feature a Fresu solo of such lyrical warmth and relaxed phrasing that the listener is nearly lulled into intoxication before Tracana adds some weight in his own Cannonball Adderley way. Fresu leads the quintet with a loose hand, and each member is allowed to explore the subtle nuances inherent in the material. Cipelli looks at each number and expresses it impressionistically, leaving the horns plenty of open space. In the front, Fresu touches deeply on the Miles Davis and early Chet Baker side of melodic invention, wrangling wonderfully muted timbral dimensions from such tunes as "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," "Darn That Dream," and Wayne Shorter's "Fall." Tracanna shines on Tom Harrell's "Sail Away" as well as "Monk's Mood" and "Star-Crossed Lovers." Cipelli and the rhythm section play almost glissando throughout, adding a shimmering light-on-water effect. They don't resort to an easy listening approach to the ballad anywhere here and, in fact, use a listener's approach to the subtle harmonic inflections and ever-shifting dynamics throughout. This set presents the Italians - and particularly Fresu - at their lyrical, consonant best. ~ by Thom Jurek, AMG.

Paolo Damiani - Ladybird (2004)

After a first listen, Paolo Damiani's Ladybird leaves you with no fixed points to orient yourself within its musical and aesthetic inspiration. It escapes any classification and, if the aim remains to find an adequate genre, countless listenings would still be insufficient. As typical of Damiani's work, Ladybird is very thought out and structured. The first two songs, Habla del Sur and Era Destino, are compositions in harmony with the aesthetics of the Egea: light and sinuous melody, full of Mediterranean radiance, where Diana Torto's vocals seem like a song without words, counterpointed by the lyricism of Fresu's trumpet and flugelhorn. Despite the perfect orchestration of all the instruments and, in particular, the happy writing of the wind parts, the true protagonist of Ladybird is the voice of Diana Torto which, we repeat, can be appreciated above all because it does not indulge too much in cold vocal virtuosity, but her "singing" is always "inside" the melody of the various pieces. Only in the piece that gives the CD its title does the voice lose the foreground, hiding until it blends in with the other instruments and the result is in any case one of the best moments of the entire work and, effectively, the most representative of the compositional and orchestral talent of Damian. ~ Extract by Dario Gentili, Jazzitalia.net. Aldo Romano - Prosodie (1995)

An interesting early session by the master drummer and composer Aldo Romano. For this album he is joined by a power-house of well-known and emerging Italian talent including trumpeter Paolo Fresu, saxophonist Stefano Di Battista, pianist Franco D'Andrea, keyboardist Jean-Michel Pilc, bassists Furio Di Castri and Michel Benita along with harmonica player Oliver Ker Ourio. All the composition are penned by Aldo Romano and as the album title 'Prosodie' infers they are structured around melody and rhythm of the sounds of a poem; rules concerning these characters of sounds. Further implying rules fixing the relationship between words and music of the song and hence the intonation and rate specific to a language. So, certainly an in-depth exploration of music, sounds and poetry, treated beautifully by a continental who’s who of fine jazz artists and musicians.

Roberto Cipelli Trio . Quartet . Quintet - Moona Moore (1988)

Roberto Cipelli's first recording as a leader reflects the sensitive nature of his personality. The sound he gets from the piano is lyrical and very musical, bringing to mind the legendary Bill Evans. Added to this are some very interesting and challenging compositions aided by the closeness that Roberto has with Paolo Fresu and Tino Tracanna as well as drummer Manhu Roche and bassist Marco Micheli. With this debut album, Roberto has established himself as a performer in his own right and a composer who will leave his mark on the Italian jazz scene. ~ David Liebman.

From 1985 till now he has been a force majeure on both the continent and abroad. There's not much more to add other than just sit back and enjoy!

Paolo Fresu - Vinodentro (2014)

And so, it can be said here: "Jazz Meets Classical" and vice versa, "The Lyrical Fresu", "the Sardinian trumpet player improvises on the classical canons" and thus tumbling into deceptive banality. The first truth is that "Vinodentro" is a soundtrack of a film by Ferdinando Vicentini Orgnani, starring Giovanna Mezzogiorno and Vincenzo Amato. The second is that Fresu is not new to the work of this musical content: the list would be too long and tedious.

That said, this work has the advantage of not imitating any great composer of soundtracks, because falling into such a trap was easy, even for Fresu. Here, we can read all the sincere connection of the trumpeter to a work that probably goes far beyond the plot of the film. Fresu writes fourteen pieces out of sixteen: the other two "As Long As From Wine" and "Madamina, The Catalog Is This" bear the royal seal of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; then there is "Freeze" co-written with Daniele Di Bonaventura. The thread that Fresu binds and gives to the film is full of elegant textures, captivating plots, bathed in romantic notes ("Quiet"); dialogical and sown with passion as in the namesake "Martango", in three takes: the first with Di Bonaventura who acts as a rhythmic counterbalance to the enlightening ensemble ‘I Virtuosi Italiani’ and Fresu that flutters decisively and crafty even with his electronic effects. The second version is more chamber music with trumpet and bandoneon played on an equal footing. The triad ends with Di Bonaventura all alone playing in the colors and in the folds of the melody.

The narrative force comes from every meander: in the arches, stormy ("Moved") or quiet, hidden. Fresu's trumpet and flugelhorn embroiders, leads and bows even where its passage is slight, imperceptible; in the water-level games of electronics that are handled with acuity by the author himself and by Michael Anger, who stands out for that superior discretion as an engraver that very few have. And Di Bonaventura, ever more authentic and personal in handling the bandoneon. A soundtrack, perhaps even for the life of those whom you love. ~ Alceste Ayroldi, Jazzitalia.net. Paolo Fresu Quintet - Jazz à Vienne (2014)

Recorded 28th June, 2014 At the Annual Jazz à Vienne Jazz Festival in Vienne, France

Here, we have a captivating performance by Italian trumpeter, composer and arranger Paolo Fresu along with his seasoned quintet. The group impresses as soon as their music swirls in the air and with their Latin lyricism the listener is easily transported into the warmth of long summer days that drift into tranquil evenings awaiting the nights to cool things down, where time pauses but the music just keeps flowing. Such is the romanticism of Paolo's music; for 30 years this quintet has played together and the result is cohesion, producing some very lively and enthralling music.

Paolo Fresu, Furio Di Castri, John Taylor - Contos [Tales] (1993)

The Italian label EGEA began its journey when Paolo Fresu and Furio di Castri felt the need to leave the tried and tested formula of the duo to welcome other musicians. The ‘Open Trio’ (which also gives its name to a composition by Paolo Fresu) became an open structure capable of hosting percussionists, drummers, pianists and multimedia artists. The meeting with the English pianist John Taylor documents a happy moment of the twenty-year collaboration between Fresu and Di Castri and a prelude to the subsequent formation of the PAF Trio together with pianist and accordionist Antonello Salis. The nine songs, largely the result of Taylor's lyric pen, interact with the compositions of Fresu and Di Castri and are also the result of a successful Italian tour. The CD is recorded live in the Teatro di Città di Castello and is part of the project to enhance the historical theaters that Egea has been pursuing for some time. ~ paolofresu.it.

Paolo Fresu's beautiful trumpet tone comparable to Miles and Chet Baker is quite unsurpassed within today’s jazz world. Equally on this date, John Taylor conveys a hauntingly bittersweet feeling to his playing, differing to his usual cold image, which fades away into beautiful solos of a greater fieriness. In addition, bassist Furio Di Castri, a long-term counterpart of Paolo Fresu, seamlessly binds the musicians together. All players contribute a number of compositions to the mix enhancing a diverse flavour to the listener’s experience. Overall, this album is a good example of the superior jazz released on the Italian Egea label, enjoy!

Paolo Fresu Quartet - Angel (1998)

A native of Sardinia, Paolo Fresu has established himself for several years as one of the great voices on the trumpet since the disappearance of Miles. In a remarkably fluid speech, he incorporates sound elements from various origins, including electronic effects which he uses sparingly. Very active, he has several regular formations, mainly a quintet. But it is with the quartet with which he has been touring for three years that he made this recording. First of all, Nguyên Lê, French guitarist who has managed to achieve a subtle mix of rock sounds and jazz harmonies and makes intelligent use of the synth guitar. And a first-rate Italian rhythm, di Castri being known elsewhere for his superb compositions. The themes, apart from two standards, Angel by Jimi Hendrix and a traditional Italian song, indicative of the personality of the musicians of the group, clearly show that we are dealing here with a real quartet. "Fellini" by Fresu is particularly moving, as we know, one of the finest musical tributes that we have made to the master. "Sueños" (Dreams) by di Castri shows us that the bassist is also a great soloist. It is therefore a very beautiful album which will undoubtedly become a reference. ~ by Alain Le Roux, Chronicart.com. Palatino - Palatino (1995)

The Palatine Hill is not only one of the hills of Rome but also a very direct train that united Rome in Paris: inaugurated in 1969 (it was recently suppressed) it took about fifteen hours to unite the two European capitals. The Palatine thus becomes a symbol to relate the music, and the sensibility, of Aldo Romano and Paolo Fresu, both Italian by birth but French by adoption. The group that takes this name materializes in 1996 and is completed by the double bass player Michel Benita and trombonist Glenn Ferris on the trombone. Active until 2001, this piano-less quartet with a decidedly engaging timbre mix, has recorded three records: "Palatino" (Label Bleu, 1996), "Tempo" (Label Bleu, 1998) and "Palatino Chap. 3 "(Universal, 2001): in his music you can hear Davis' echoes, afro splinters, melodic cues and above all the West Coast environments typical of the dialogues between Chet Baker and Bob Brookmeyer seem to re-emerge. More recently, in May 2011, quartet was filmed on the stage of the Maize de la Culture in Grenoble and the result was reproduced on a double cd from the title "Back In Town" (Naïve, 2011).
