Lew Soloff - Hanalei Bay (1985)

Solid Jazz/Funk from Veteran Horn Man......... Excellent jazz outing from veteran trumpet/flugelhorn man Lew Soloff. With him on this groove are Gil Evans-electric piano, Pete Levin-synthesizer, Hiram Bullock-guitars, Mark Egan-bass, Adam Nussbaum-drums and Manolo Badrena-percussion. Just a stellar lineup. This is an older release from 1985-86 but still remains solid and as strong today as it did upon its release. Soloff was one of the founding members of Blood, Sweat & Tears and has since played with everyone including his own solo projects. The interplay between the musicians is exceptional and Soloff's tone rich sounds never sounded better. They do a take on Well You Needn't and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat from Monk and Mingus respectively that are just stunning works. I am surprised that no one has ever reviewed this release yet. This is a tight outfit with plenty of energy to burn, and they do just that. If you like straight up funky jazz from a super tight ensemble you will love this. All of the musicians are in top form here. I highly recommend this recording. ~ John W. Shearer, 4.0 Stars, Amazon.com.

Saori Yano - Best (2007) [CD + DVD]

Here we have a wonderful compilation drawn from Saori's albums pre-dating 2007. The CD is made up of thirteen choice tracks, and included is I &I, not released on her studio albums, but from an advertising promotion that brought her further fame. Incorporated in the fantastic package is a DVD that showcases video frontage of that commercial, as well as four other promotional videos. These clips give the Saori fan an insight as to the formidable company she was associated with throughout those classic early years. Looking back, she hung out with an assemblage of great jazz musicians during her recording tenure in New York City. The reader can easily see from personnel listed that she gave and was given great respect when performing. In this regard, it is important to note that she is not just a player, but also a fine composer and to this extent within this selection are five of her own tunes. Listeners can only marvel this brilliant jazz musician on the job at such an early age, enjoy!

Saori Yano - Groovin' High (2006)

Saori Yano, celebrated her 20th birthday on 27th October, 2006, and released this album "Groovin' High" that marks the end of her teenage years and the start of her 20s and beyond. The theme of this, her fifth album as leader is based around jazz expression in an ensemble format utilizing such jazz greats as: Randy Brecker (tp), Slide Hampton (tb), Jimmy Heath (ts), James Moody (ts,fl), Gary Smulyan (bs), Masaaki Imaizumi (p), Ray Drummond (b) and Adam Nussbaum (ds) in a mode reminiscent of her much loved and admired Dizzy Gillespie, whom was equally noted for his own big band groupings. Recorded at Clinton Studio, New York, Saori chose as her setlist a vivid array of well-known jazz standards. Listeners of Saori, even at this early age can truly appreciate her versatile and expansive performance/s, whilst accompanied by the some of the best modern day jazz masters. Her prowess lies in her ability to express herself freely at the same time showcasing her virtuosity, laying down the ground to be recognised as a bright new contender in the jazz world today. Overall, for any jazz fan this album serves as one not to be overlooked, enjoy!

BANN: Seamus Blake, Jay Anderson, Oz Noy, Adam Nussbaum - As You Like (2010)

Taking its name from the first letter of the last names of saxophonist Seamus Blake, bassist Jay Anderson, guitarist Oz Noy and drummer Adam Nussbaum, BANN is an accomplished quartet. All four are well known for their consistently hig quality recordings and focus on more fusion-oriented approaches to composing and playing. Selecting six member-penned pieces and three covers, the band explores classic Monk ("Played Twice"), the Great American Songbook (Jerome Kern's "All the Things You Are") and even classic rock with David Crosby's "Guinnevere." This last track fares far better as an instrumental than it did with its original silly hippie lyric. But the session really doesn’t start to burn until Jay Anderson's "Will Call" which finds all members swinging hard and tossing out jagged shards of soloing. There are even moments of Slowpoke-like bluesiness on "At Sundown." Grade: B. ~ Stuart Derdeyn, TheProvince.com.

Tony Lakatos Trio - I Get Along With You Very Well (2003)

The Music Of Hoagy Carmichael
The idea for an interesting, hit album is usually simple: collect popular and known standards, select perfect musicians and the “top of the hits” session is ready. This time the protagonist of the recording "I Get Along With You Very Well" is not only by the outstanding American composer Hoagy Carmichael, but Tony Lakatos - a Hungarian saxophonist and composer, one of the most eminent European jazz musicians who has made an unprecedented appearance on the world music market. A perfectly educated violinist (!) and saxophonist began his jazz career by winning the prestigious jazz competition in 1977 and the Bela Bartok Conservatory index. In 1981 he moved to Germany in order - like other jazz emigrants from Eastern Europe - to appear on the European jazz scene. Excellent reviews of concerts have allowed the Hungarian musician to appear among the most outstanding jazz groups. Over 150 recorded albums and participation in bands of Al Foster, Anthony Jackson, Kirk Lightsey, Joanne Bracken, Cecil McBee, George Mraz, Trikol Gurtu, Randy Brecker, Alex Acun, Charlie Mariano ... This time Tony Lakatos realized "I Get Along With You Very Well" - a standards project and chose the best studio in Brooklyn, New York, Systems Two as the venue for the session. Lakatos invited bassists (George Mraz and Tim Lefebvre) and drummer Adam Nussbaum to record famous compositions by an American composer Hoagy Carmichael. Excellent versions of "Georgia On My Mind", "Skylark", "April In My Heart", "I Get Along Without You Very Well" enriched with suggestive interpretations of the legendary vocalist Jimmy Scott (unique and timeless versions of "The Nearness Of You", "Stardust" and "Skylark") create a small jazz masterpiece from a project by Tony Lakatos. ~ Extract by Dionizy Piatkowski, jazz.pl. Dino Rubino - Where Is The Happiness? (2017)

Where Is The Happiness?
Question for which there is no human being who has not sought an answer. Philosophers, writers, painters, composers and above all the common man have come to terms with this unresolved question or with an answer that is sometimes so obvious that it does not deserve any consideration. This is what Dino Rubino wonders in his latest record published by Tùk Music and made with a highly respected crew that sees Emanuele Cisi on sax, Angelo Bonaccorso on French horn, Gaetano Cristofaro on clarinet, Giuseppe Mirabella on guitar, Paolino Dalla Porta on double bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums. The ten musical tracks that the pianist and trumpeter writes for this recording unfold on the trail of this answer, as well as an original version of “Sugar Man”, a famous piece by Sixto Rodriguez. Just as it is true that happiness is everywhere and at the same time nowhere, these pieces testify to Rubino's exploration of that musical metalanguage that knows no genre limit. In fact, there is a whole baggage of artistic experiences and listening in these pieces, from jazz to folk, rock, pop and classic repertoire, influences that, perfectly digested and reworked by Dino Rubino, emerge in different ways in these songs, almost to render concrete is the quote from Paolo Fresu that stands out in the booklet of the cd and that reads "Happiness is also not depriving oneself of anything". The pursuit of happiness in this music is something that has to do with an element of optimism and positivity, it proceeds through never dark atmospheres, on the contrary illuminated in the path by that light of spirituality that inevitably cheers. Dino Rubino wanted to add a literary equivalent to each of these passages, offering as many of his poems to be read in the booklet. Verses that do not describe, but rather suggest memories, images, stories that each of us has experienced at least once. Because happiness is never just a melody, but it is also word and vision, like that of the images that the Polish illustrator Joanna Gniady also offers to accompany this work. The opening "Joyful" is perfectly symmetrical to the "Happiness", which closes the disc: from joy, a euphoric but temporary condition of the spirit, to the awareness of a happiness that, however faint for all of us, reveals itself with a cyclical and regular rhythmic scan. As if to say that sometimes it goes away, but then it always comes back. And Dino Rubino dedicates this record to the "seekers of happiness", that is, to everyone, to that man who, at the center of the world, is also at the center of this music. ~ PianoSolo.it.

Rick Margitza - Color (1989)

Rick Margitza's debut features the playing of a young tenor-saxophonist who mixes together the usual influences: Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane. In his favor is that Margitza's 11 originals (performed with a septet that includes guitarist Steve Masakowski, pianist Joey Calderazzo and Jim Beard on synthesizers) range from a Coltranish blues to the poppish "Color Scheme," from brooding ballads to uptempo straightahead explorations. The main weak point is that some of Margitza's solos sound as if he they were taken straight from exercise books. Less formal studying and more jamming will probably eventually eliminate that problem for Margitza certainly had the technique and the power at this early point in his career. ~ by Scott Yanow, AMG.

Riccardo Fassi - Riccardo Fassi New York Quintet (1998)

This CD represents an emblematic example of the high level of Italian jazz, which has nothing to envy for quality projects of its exponents to what is practiced overseas. The esteem that Riccardo Fassi enjoys with American musicians is well known to fans of African American music, as evidenced by his past collaborations with Steve Lacy, Tim Berne, Oliver Lake, Gunter Schuller, and especially his beautiful record of 1993 New York Trio (also for the YVP) with Rufus Reid and Marvin Smith. An elegant and refined writing of mainstream derivation permeates the CD, in which the pianist has carved out the difficult and discrete role of the orchestra more than the soloist, leaving room for the delicious solos now responsorial now in unison by Gary Smulyan engaged in the baritone saxophone and of vibraphonist Bryan Carrott, whose great rhythmic verve recalls the best Bobby Hutcherson of the '60s. Already the first notes of the CD, suggest a perfect balance between the components of the quintet, which leads the musicians to interact as if they were in an orchestra, aiming for short and dense solos, without ambitions of hyper-virtuosity pleased in a continuous game of tension and distension. A soft and relaxed atmosphere, never however glossy or mushy, permeates the development of most of the pieces including "Just Love", "Alluminio" and "Lamu", from the suave melodic performance. Carrott's performance is enhanced by the record, to which the recording industry has not (incredibly) granted until today the opportunity to show off with engravings on its behalf. And this seems all the truer given that today the creation of CDs no longer denies anyone. The forty-three vibraphonist New Yorker, who had already contributed with Fassi to the success of the "Conduction 43" by Butch Morris during the course of Verona Jazz in 1994, gives his instrument greater harmonic freedom and timbre variety to the weaving of the songs, on which the relaxed and relaxed interplay of the quintet. The beauty of the themes - all fascinating and seductive as few - and the rapid melodic and rhythmic changes, finally avert the predictability that generally characterizes the mainstream production, rigid in the structuring of the solos and the monochordal path. 4 Stars, ~ by Maurizio Zerbo [Translation from Italian].

Ted Curson - I Heard Mingus (1980) [vinyl>flac]

Here we have rare and dynamic outing by the late great trumpeter Ted Curson. The title certainly informs the casual listener that he indeed spent some time with Charles Mingus. He is best known for his work with Charles Mingus' 1960 quartet (which also included Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin and Dannie Richmond). An album to appreciate this fertile association is Mingus at Antibes recorded at a live 1960 performance at Juan-les-Pins and released in 1976. For this date Curson teams up with a very solid rhythm section. Mike Richmond really drives the group forward. There is plenty of room for both Ted and McNeely and Kawasaki to solo and develop some most active and energetic exchanges. Indeed the horn players in both Saxton and Morgenstein add to this strong if somewhat more freer performance than would be expected from such a crew. He essentially was an excellent and flexible trumpeter; personally I have always enjoyed Curson’s excursions into freer jazz formats. Pop Wine (1971) and Cattin' Curson (1973) are two such albums where he is joined by the mighty George Arvanitas Trio and Chris Woods. As always Ted can put together a beautiful ballad and a definite highlight is ‘Lost Her’, Enjoy!
