Prestigeous 1955
It really is amazing the insights you get through these kinds of exercises. My initial guess was that 1955 would be a better starting point for my 'Birth of Hard Bop' concept than my previous voyage through 1956. If you listen to these, I think you will find something quite different than you might expect. At least at Prestige, 1955 was a pretty thin year - the sessions are around 25% fewer than 1956 and the style is some sort of cool jazz/be-bop fusion. Late in the year you hear the spark of a new thing that becomes Hard Bop.

I really appreciate these comps you put together.
ReplyDeleteThey make me return to the music of my youth and the roots of what I love today.
Thank you so much.
Paul
Thank you so much, Paul - making them has had the same effect on me, but it is quite special to hear they have had that effect on someone else.
ReplyDeleteThis series is definitely excellent. I downloaded '56 and have it in regular rotation on my SQueezebox.

I was always quite confounded by the misnomer.
ReplyDeleteI mean, I would listen, and my feet would start tapping and my bones would be grooving, but I could never see what it was that made it essentially difficult, nor why difficulty might be considered worthy in and of itself.
Honestly - I figured it out only recently - and needed help to do so.
"Solid Bop" I could have coped with, "Soul Bop" easier still.
But "Hard Bop" caused confusion for me, poor chap.
A silly name.
Who coined the term, I wonder.
Anyone know?
Thanks nonetheless for foot-tapping groovage.
And thanks for the stonking new banner illustration.
Yay.
