Tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis recorded enough material over these two sessions to fill up four records. The seven selections included on this album were recorded during the same period as Davis's better-known Cookbook albums. The album includes: Jerome Richardson swapping between baritone, flute and tenor on three of the tunes; bassist George Duvivier; drummer Arthur Edgehill and of course the 'Queen of the Organ' Shirley Scott. As a group the players swing hard covering some solid originals by both Eddie and Shirley, some blues and an occasional ballad. It is not hard to see why this Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis band was very popular in its time being such a powerful and accessible band even today's mixed jazz world. Not sure if you know Chris, but Jaws is one of my all time faves. His quintet with Griff is one of my favorite working groups. This is exactly the type of post I love to see at the Crypt!!

ReplyDeleteKC makes the best point, unless you are blessed with a group of friends or spouse who share your love for music at this level - who the hell else is there to talk to?!?!? Nobody else wants to hear the ravings of a jazz fan, that's for sure. Still people don't take full advantage of the community aspect.
As for the music, I always enjoyed Scott's partnership with Jaws much more than Turrentine. Just a better vibe if you ask me.
Thanks for the effort Chris. I looked through all my Eddie recordings and was sure I had this. However, I did not! Even with all the Cookbook volumes, etc. This one is not on my radar. Unfortunately, from this side of the fence the attempt to listen has become such a pain that I finally gave up on hearing this one! The Embed is a pain to navigate and once one figures out which buttons to push so to speak the inevitable conclusion seems to be deadends. Being a Jazzer is difficult. Doing what you and PC and King do must be very frustrating indeed! How do you keep it up?!?
