Xanadu became the platform for a resurgence by the great tenor player Al Cohn in the mid 70's. You may be more familiar with Al's work as one of the Four Brothers or any of the great duo albums with Zoot Sims but here you have Al in an intimate quartet. Cohn was a decidedly unique player, probably the most complex of The Brothers (Getz, Sims, Marsh and Cohn). Cohn was such a prolific writer and arranger that you would expect this record to feature mostly originals but the session is mostly relaxed standards which reveal Al's tone and personal vision. Barry Harris is here joined by two different but equally talented trio mates - listen to one of the other Xanadu dates where he is with Leroy Vinnegar and Billy Higgins and compare it to this - it is fascinating.
