A lost chapter in the legendary Harold Land/Bobby Hutcherson relationship – and a record that often gets overlooked. The set is a great moody mellow bit of jazz funk, recorded with Buster Williams on bass, Bill Henderson on electric piano, and Billy Hart on drums. Mtume sits in on congas, and the tracks have a very soulful groove that's different than the duo's work on Blue Note, but which also has the same sense of funkiness. Well not my idea of jazz-funk, this is straight ahead jazz and a logical development from the previous Blue Notes!

ReplyDeleteI was fortunate to see him and Bobby Hutcherson together, The Timeless All-Stars, as a part of so many Bay Area festivals that it became a family joke. Every show was great.
Thanks again for Mr. Land. I'm not familiar with him but am looking forward to listening to him and Hutcherson together.

ReplyDeleteBelated thanks for this -- I've been listening to it a lot recently. I really love anything Hutch/Land did together and had forgotten about this one. It's really something that they were able to have such an immediately recognizable sound despite multiple rhythm sections. It's a shame this album's been so overlooked!
