Nathan Davis - Jazz Concert in a Bennedictine Monastery

This is certainly one of the rarest of birds and after years of trying to clean a muddy cassette tape copy from an old pal J.D., (it was better than nothing for sure), I have finally pieced together a much cleaner, clearer copy from multiple sources and in mp3. Still not perfect, but MUCH better than what we've had around here to date. The music itself is well worth the trouble, Davis is at his peak as is Waldron, and the Woode/Taylor rhythm connection is a powerful one. Great Stuff!

  5. Okay - Definitely NOT the same as mine (which comes from 2 different sources, 2 of the tracks are from a remastered cd) - not sure one which sounds best yet

  9. Wow, King, amazing post! So my little Nathan Davis collection is complete... almost... there is one particular track on an impossible to find Turkish album (at least here in Germany) called:
various artists - Enstrümantal 73 (Yonca YC-5002) from 1973! The track is the final one on the flip side and features Nathan Davis , Akagündüz Kutbay , Emin Fındıkoğlu - it is called "Çeçen Kızı" (meaning "Czech Girl") (second issue: various artists - TRT Ara Müzikleri) (hope those Turkish characters will be published correctly...). This is amazing music!
Have we got Turkish friends here?

  12. Thanks King and Anon'n'non. Engaging music, abysmal recording.
Never heard so much distortion / overmodulation / saturation on an official release,
    plus, several dropouts on the right channel reveal that a recycled – or defective - tape was employed;
however, some of the dropouts are of more complex origin, which would be rather boring to discuss here.
Other issues concerning stereo imaging and on-the-fly mixing appear here and there. Very amateur-ish.
Let's say the recordist wasn't Rudy Van Gelder, so to speak. Moreover, the original vinyl was in less than ideal
condition and that's the icing on the, ahem, cake.
Anyway, as a little contribution to the cause, here's a thoroughly cleaned up and repaired version
(courtesy of iZotope RX), which imo sounds a bit more pleasant. Hope you like it.

P.S. Did you know? Rapidshare gave up the ghost recently. I think we all knew it would
happen. They even lasted a bit more than I had predicted back in the day, but it's happened.
    Long live Zippyshare!

  13. Wow, three choices of a rare record! Love this place. I gave all three a listen and preferred Arvin's RX version by a slight margin, although all three filesets sound pretty similar. The other two rips sound like different copies, but I couldn't hear one rip being clearly better. Thank you KC, Anon, and Arvin for sharing all of this! Crummy recording, wonderful music.

  14. I have a genuine lossless rip of this from somewhere, but the sound is no better than any of the MP3 copies!! Maybe gonna give Arvin's one a try...frankly I don't think we're ever gonna get a real perfect rip, unless somebody works from the original tapes and does a complete restoration job.....even then, if the tapes are that bad...!?

  15. By the way, I'm not the same JD that provided KC with that old tape back in the day!

  16. After listening to the music I would like to give a huge Thank You! And only now I've spotted the track from the Turkish release. Thanks once more!!

  17. I have this in FLAC, but can't recall where from. It's dated 2010 & has comment "I stumbled across the original disc sent to me by 'Marc' (a friend of music from France) the other day and decided to re-do the whole rip and parsing in FLAC and re-post this with both sets of links.". I'll compare it to some of the above & see if it's any better.
