Was anyone more lastingly 'touched' by their association with Monk than Sahib Shihab? He always maintained a quirky edge, a 'different' slant that seemed to have it's genesis in his participation in the Blue Note Monk sessions.
On this session it is very clear that our ex-patriot jazzmen had their ears wide open to what was happening here and were making albums of equal depth that would have played well here in the States if we had only known...

ReplyDeleteThanks for this rarity, KingCake.... the US's loss was Europe's gain. He made some great recordings over here.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving this one KC. Had a head full of the Steve Lacy just posted over at Different Perspectives ("The Rent" with "Shuffle Boil") so the suggested Monk touch seems spot on, especially on the theme to the first track ("Ma'nee"). Big Thanks
ReplyDeleteHey KC, I share your enthusiasm for Shibab and this is one I am not familiar with. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMan this looks heavy!! Storyville was such a great label with an amazing range of styles - possibly one of the most balanced looks at jazz when considering labels like Blue Note. I am not familiar with the drummer but if he can keep up to Drew and NHOP, he must be good. Thanks for this one...
ReplyDeleteThanks KC for this vinyl version Shihab's composition are some of the best jazz tunes.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! It will be great to hear Shihab in a quartet setting!
ReplyDeleteThanks KC, this looks great.
ReplyDeleteMuch appreciated, kc! Thanks for pointing out the Monk influence -- it seems so obvious, but I'd never connected those dots before. I'm very happy to hear this again with fresh ears -- most of my Shihab rips from the early days of the jazzblogs have been lost to digital oblivion, so I'm starting from scratch again. Thank you for this one!!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, KC!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks KingCake!
