Joe Henderson - A Pair with Chick

Joe-fest continues!

From 1963 to 1968 Henderson's output as a leader was all Blue Note; from 1968 to 1978 it was all Milestone. All of that material is and has been pretty readily available, but in 1978 it appears that Joe's Milestone contract expired and he began to show up on some of the independent labels for one-off (or two in the cases of Enja and Red) dates that are all strong records.

The Enja sessions are a bit too far 'out' for my tastes, but these two are real gems! Both the Contemporary and MPS sessions are in monster quartets featuring Chick Corea on piano.

These two aren't quite as hard to get as they once were, but still not exactly 'mainstream' issues for all fans. The rips are both in flac w/ scans.

  3. P.S. Had to rename part 2 of Relaxin's rar files, to begin with prefix '712' before it would extract all the tunes correctly.

  5. Nice KC . . . thanks! I have lots of Joe and had never listened to this. Seeing that Tony Williams is on two cuts is really exciting.

  6. Two great albums, kc -- nice to see them here! Given how convoluted some of Joe's later Milestone albums were (and I love some of his earlier fusion stuff!), these feel like he's clearing his head a bit. Ethan Iverson makes an interesting comment about Corea's playing on these at http://dothemath.typepad.com/dtm/73-90-redux.html

"Recently I went through the two Joe Henderson quartet records with Corea, Mirror, Mirror and Relaxing at the Camarillo. There is a moment on the Bird blues "Camarillo" that helps explain why I wish somebody else was holding down the piano chair. During the second chorus bassist Tony Dumas begins responding to Corea's open explorations by breaking up the time with some nice supensions. The pianist freaks out and shouts, "Dumas, walk!" ... Dumas immediately falls in line and the moment is lost. I simply can't imagine any of my piano heroes on this page -- including Bill Evans -- barking at a bassist in the studio like this."

  7. You are right, NICK ! Corea is a very bad guy, active member of the gangster organisation "Scientology" ! In France there are several concert-promoters, who don't book him any more, as he always tries to provide and distrubute info-material which wants to gain new members for this criminal group !!!
