As far as I know unissued on CD, this vinyl rip is a gift from Risemer
Review by Scott Yanow:
For this interesting LP, drummer Chico Hamilton is mostly heard with an octet of Los Angeles musicians. The group, comprised of trumpet/trombone/tenor man Harold Land, French horn/flute (or piccolo) player and guitarist Gabor Szabo, bassist Albert Stinson, and the drummer/leader, performs originals by Hamilton and Szabo, plus "What's New." The concise performances (which are often tightly arranged) are full of subtleties and fine playing, particularly from the guitarist. The title cut was recorded two months later and is the last recording by Chico Hamilton with his star sideman Charles Lloyd, who is heard on flute. Not essential, but this album has its strong moments.
Side A:
1 Chic Chic Chico (Manny Albam) 2:47
2 Corrida De Toros (Gabor Szabo) 5:35
3 Tarantula (Gabor Szabo) 3:03
4 What's New? (Bob Haggart/Johnny Burke) 6:02
Side B:
1 St. Paddy's Day Parade (Chico Hamilton) 3:09
2 Carol's Walk (Chico Hamilton) 6:36
3 Swampy (Gabor Szabo) 2:45
4 Fire Works (Gabor Szabo) 5:52

Some files seem to be saturated, but they are not. In my opinion, it is due to the Chico Hamilton way of playing during the 60s, with a over-exposure of Zidjans. If you edit the waves you will note that they are right.
By the way, any possibility of finding and posting Shelly Manne - Outside? (Contemporary LP S-7624, 1970). Never issued as Contemporary CD, but there is an Audiophile copy. The Audiophile service does not apply in Chile.
All thanks to Risemer for ripping and uploading his vinyl.
Many thanks to Grump and Risemer. This is very fine!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for sharing, Grumpy!!
ReplyDeleteHi there. Old reader here, used to be known as freebones, getting back into the jazz sharing game, going anon because I am not interested in starting over. Thanks for this. I recently saw an enticing pressing of this for only 10$ and was very excited, but sadness of sadness, it was the red/black label and not the original orange/black. My collector heart was sad, but I was happy that perhaps a less picky listener could enjoy the nice package for a nice price.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, thanks for this. Been meaning to grab some Chico on my favorite label for awhile now!

Many thanks, Quimsy. It was Risemer's request but I'll take it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Grumpy and Risemer. And Quimsy, of course.
ReplyDeleteQuimsy, Grumpy, many, many thanks for Shelly Manne - Outside. Listening to the tune "Steve" again after almost 40 years (my cassette was stolen in 1974), was really emotive to me. In return, I´m preparing another Shelly Manne rarity for Grumpy to post.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the interesting post Grumpy
ReplyDeleteGreat, great music ! What a chance to discover it for those who don't know.
