Roy Haynes - Modern Jazz Group Swing 10", 1954, France

My friend Robert is a saxophonist and a Frenchman and a big fan of Barney Wilen. His feeling is that Wilen is the most melodic of players in the hard bop/post bop era. Wilen's improvisations are always close to the bone of the song, he is remarkably UN-selfindulgent in his choices. Through Robert, I have grown to appreciate Wilen too, I think he appeals to me in the same way that John Park does. This rare French 10" was Wilen's first recording, he was 17! Roy Haynes had made his own professional debut at the same age 10 years earlier but this was only his second session as a leader. A lovely little session it is too, Gourley, Renaud and Cameron all have sparkling contributions and of course Roy and Joe Benjamin are impeccable - 20 minutes of bliss.

  2. many thanks for spreading this around. I have also always admired Wilen's lyricism. Here he is still in 'cool' bag, mostly Getz, the then dominant US style. As almost all euro players, he soon changed models and changed again as US fashion changed.

  3. Yeah Cream Cake,

This is most deserving of the coveted DEEP CLASP.
    In brief: CLASP!!
And a bonus HOORAH to boot.

  6. Nothing wrong with the link - it works perfectly - you need to get rid of that Chrome crap and it's ridiculous filters or try a download manager

  7. Many thanks, KC. Wonderful!

I've used JDownloader to manage mir.cr, I've downloaded it without any problem

  8. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm using a desktop (not any of the Chromebooks) and the Chrome browser is not installed (I'm using Firefox, as noted earlier), so I'm not sure to what "Chrome crap" refers. Yes, clearly, the link is valid. As far as I can tell, the problem is a DNS issue. I tried to access the mir site via a proxy - six different ones, in fact. Those all started loading the page, but the portion showing the download links never appeared.

I appreciate the recommendation of JDownloader, prowita, but I happily got rid of it last year and would like to avoid installing it again. I have two other possible solutions, one of which will have to wait until next week. No problem. I'm not in a hurry.

  9. Sorry, I misunderstood,
Chrome is often so over sensitive to cookies and links that it calls perfectly safe sites malware. It doesn't like the add-ons to count traffic for example
    - I'm trying mirrorcreator because the download options are superior (faster) to embedupload and on my computers it seems to work better - the page loads right up for me -- is anyone else having a similar problem?

  11. Thanks, KC. That embedupload link works a treat.

Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, but I'd like to hear from people who have Fichier accounts. I've downloaded from them as a free user at speeds better than I get from RS as a subscriber; and I like that they don't automatically extend your subscription like Hotfile does. Are there any Fichier subscribers here who can comment on the service?

  13. There appear to be some balance problems with the recording but I'm assuming that they are on the original masters.
    CLASP remains.

  14. Superb side KC. BTW, I used the Gamefront link which came in at blazing speed. Had the album in one minute. I also use Chrome, so no issues at all.

Thank you King, for this post.
Arrangements, solos, etc; Deep has reason on his comment but I noticed it on two tracks.
