Oddly the final album of this marvelous band is the least exciting of the three. That is not to infer that it by any means bad, it is just that the bar was set awfully high by the first two albums. Even on their worst day these guys were not capable of bad. Listening to the record now I am loving it, just not as much as the other two. This scary perfect rip comes from our pal Wid.

  1. Thank you so much for finding & posting this. I saw it once around 30 years ago, didn't buy it and have regretted it since. On first listen, I agree that it's not as good as Keno's two Strata East records, but I'm looking forward to playing it many more times. Now, any chance you could get a copy of Frank Strozier's "Dance Dance" lp on Trident?

  2. Thanks, Wid & KingCake!

Terrific achievement to have posted all three Keno Duke albums - something that the CD reissue producers have shown no interest in. As for this, the last one, I think it is quite good, although I still hold "Sense Of Values" as the best of them.

This once again raises the question - whatever happened to Keno Duke?

The other members of the band would in the coming years in various constellations record together. The highest common presence is on George Coleman's "Big George" from 1977, which has all four of the sidemen. Instead of Keno Duke, it has Idris Muhammad (Leo Morris) on drums and also three additional horns.

This was the first release on the obscure Trident label. Frank Strozier's "Dance, Dance", which sitarswami mentions above, was the second. It has three of the Contemporaries members: Strozier, Mabern and Atkinson. All in all there would only be six releases on Trident.
