Joe Sample - The Pecan Tree (2002)

The Pecan Tree is a collection of 11 compositions from master pianist/composer Joe Sample that were inspired by his Southeast Texas roots and influences. As a founding member of the pioneering quartet the Jazz Crusaders and as a solo artist, the pianist has created an impressive musical style based upon his early appreciation for jazz, gospel, soul, bebop, blues, Latin, and classical music. The Pecan Tree features many of those musical genres performed with such special guests as Lenny Castro and Paulinho da Costa on percussion, renowned R&B vocalist Howard Hewett, and newcomer Lizz Wright. Sample's Quintet kicks off the set with the title track, a Latin-tinged mid-tempo instrumental that features Sample's beautiful melodicism in harmony with the percussive mastery of Lenny Castro. The ensemble brings their creativity ingenuity to "Hot and Humid," a sweltering musical story of the region's weather condition. You can literally feel the heat from Sample's fiery piano chops. The soulful voice of Howard Hewett on "With These Hands" also makes this CD entertaining. He envelopes the listener with his gospel-tinged R&B tenor and holds you spellbound throughout this lovely ballad with his powerful range and heartfelt lyricism. Saori Yano has been sending a new breeze to the jazz world since her amazing debut at the age of 16 in September 2003. She has released nine works including the best album so far, and will celebrate the 10th anniversary year from September 2012. The first release of her anniversary year is a fan-voted request album. For 10 years since her debut, she held fan votes on the web and at live venues to maximize her gratitude to the fans who continued to support her, and recorded the album from among them. Good Recording to Feel More Room
Saori Yano, here demonstrates the appeal of lightness and a neat performance, that cannot be said in the first album, but in this 02, I felt more room in this performance (there was no room in the first), but it creates more fun. When I look at the live performance, it seems to me that I'm always working hard, rather than enjoying the performance (although the sound is quite stretchy), but the CD recording is on the contrary, it feels like a relaxed performance. On this album, the talent of music making blossoms, and "sand and skirt" is a masterpiece. In the live, the ad lib is even clearer, and it has become an indispensable classic song. Of course, Parker and Baker's repertoire is also a unique and refreshing performance that is perfect for everyday jazz-fun. The JazzTimes Superband (2000)

When a tune has a catchy sound to it, the melody lingers on. Paul Bollenback, Randy Brecker, Joey DeFrancesco and Bob Berg each contribute memorable compositions to this album; compositions that catch your ear and leave you happy to hear them again. Berg placed his tune "Friday Night at the Cadillac Club" on two previous albums as well as on Dizzy Gillespie’s 1992 Rhythmstick album. The piece works. Like Brecker’s "The Ada Strut" and Eddie Harris’ "Freedom Jazz Dance," Berg’s song stays with you and brings a smile of recognition every time it’s played. The all-star band performs hard-hitting, straight-ahead material with nods to Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Jack McDuff and Larry Young. Brecker and Berg each wrote three of the session’s tunes, while both DeFrancesco and Bollenback contributed one. Since it’s an organ combo, the Superband needs no bass; DeFrancesco’s bass line is fast and without distinct edges. Brecker plays his part bright and fluid. He’s at the top of his form. Always taking care to produce a proper sound column, rich in overtones, the trumpeter also plays each number loose and expressive. DeFrancesco is upbeat, always propelling the unit. The organist builds each solo into a fiery peak; quite fast and furious when appropriate. Saxophonist Berg is mellower, respecting a good clear tone, while keeping it round for a loose blues honk. Berg uses the instrument’s full range. His feature role on "Oleo" runs fast and expressive, catching fire at the end of his solo. Bollenback’s work is articulate with attention to tone quality. His solo work remains fluid, while his solid accompaniment plays a key role in the ensemble’s highly successful program. Drummer Dennis Chambers provides clear and crisp coloring. He takes a few drum breaks, but for the most part prefers to steady the unit’s rhythm as a constant force. The JazzTimes® Superband employs a straight-ahead format with innovative solos all around and fours with the drummer. The formula works quite well. ~ by Jim Santella, AAJ.

Jano Quartet feat. Luca Aquino - Distante (2012)

Distante is the second rehearsal in the studio for the Marche-based Jano Quartet, after the interesting self-produced debut Naked Things. On this occasion it is Via Veneto Jazz to publish the album, in which trumpeter Luca Aquino also actively participates, capable with his never predictable musical vision of giving further expressive keys to the already wide spectrum of the band. Theirs is an electro-acoustic approach, as the electronic component plays a central role in the compositional strategies of the ten originals in the program, which range with ease from relaxed situations such as Affinity-Michka to passages with a sourer and more controversial flavor, such as Marching of Thousand People. Between the lines we can read the desire to break determined and predictable patterns, adding rhythmic matrices full of grooves, solos that undertake tangents close to free and figurations that intertwine even complex melodies. The diversity of the writing of the pieces, six of which are signed by the pianist Emiliano D'Auria, brings to this work the alternation of flavors and atmospheres that keep alive a tension that would otherwise fail. Exemplary, in this sense, is the passage in the lineup between the ballad with sentimental features Yelizaveta , the organized chaos of the rumoristic The World Is Changing Hertz , and the chiaroscuro tones that pervade Viola. ~ Roberto Paviglianiti, suono.it. Piero Odorici Quartet - First Play (1989)

Here we have Piero Odorici’s earliest recordings as a leader. Essentially, his exposure to the jazz world was limited to the continent, but in recent years he has formed an international quartet with world-renowned musicians such as: George Cables, David Hazeltine, Darryl Hall, John Webber, Victor Lewis and Joe Farnsworth. This very talented, but sadly underrated reedman has fashioned his own distinct sound. To think this album was recorded in 1989, one can only marvel at his expertise and writing ability. For this date he presents three of his own tunes and the remainder well-known standards. He is joined by pianist Marcello Tonolo (brother of Pietro Tonolo), who kicks off the album with one of his tunes. Additional to the rhythm section, Piero draws on the support of bassist Marc Abrams and drummer Savatore Tranchini. The album truly showcases Piero's dexterity and smooth vibrant tone on alto and is well worth the listen, enjoy!

Alto saxophonist Saori Yano, prior to the release of this album has been active in the Japanese jazz scene for more than ten years. Saori following in the footsteps of Charlie Parker, continues her devotion towards and further exploration and revival of bebop in a modern revision as showcased in her previous album BeBop At The Savoy (2009). Yano's consistent platform of Bebop sets the cornerstone of her broader love of salsa, incorporating other funky rich elements, by surrounding herself with other like-minded and equally passionate musicians. Together they fully reveal the valor to challenge Yano's innate ambition to create exciting modern jazz music, throwing aside the complex academic and somewhat hidden reservations that traditionalists would have conveyed. Riccardo Zegna is an Italian jazz pianist, an extraordinary soloist at the piano, who hates stardom and lives secluded in Loano, far from the clamor of city life. Here, he showcases a unique album comprised of piano, saxophones, accordion and cello. The ambience of this project, that he creates is one of tranquil, but very expressive chamber jazz music. He is joined by a very talented bunch of other noted Italian jazz musicians. Included in this grouping is the renowned Italian reed player Pietro Tonolo and scintillating accordionist Gil Goldstein. Also drawn into this magical mix is the spellbinding bowing of cellist Enrico Di Crosta. The songs are a succession of lyrical moments and improvisation. Giovanni Mirabassi - Dal Vivo ! (2001)

The first live album that the talented Mirabassi summons with full satisfaction. The dazzling beauty invites you to the end of euphoria. Giovanni Mirabassi's long-awaited third album is a live album by the trio. There is a lot of difference in the amount of experience, so it's just based on personal standards, but to be honest, I feel that I have come across one of the best masterpieces of a piano trio live album. I don't think there is any need for extra annotations, such as who the performer is or what the sound source is. Mirabassi's ability to consistently express his aesthetic sense in the form of a live performance is outstanding, and the tension that is painfully beautiful but not sentimental is wonderful. The songs played are basically original, so please pay attention to this point as well. The only exception is track 8, which decorated the opening of Avanti! but this is already "singing"! Even, if it isn't, the sweet melody will shine with a new life through the trio performance and live situation. It will be almost blissful for those who love music. Regardless of Mirabassi's popularity, I hope that this performance will reach as many listeners as possible. Marion Brown & Jazz Cussion - Echoes Of Blue (1992)

He is undoubtedly a legend. Marion Brown, born in Atlanta/Georgia, was already counted among the prominent musicians of the ‘New Wave of Jazz’ movement in the sixties and recorded important albums under his own name for Impulse, ESP and ECM. As a sideman, he participated in epoch-making releases such as Ascension by John Coltrane and Fire Music by Archie Shepp. These activities helped him to become an important saxophonist with an unmistakable voice. Projects and tours followed with Sun Ra, Paul Bley, Pharoah Sanders, Leo Smith, Gunter Hampel and Mal Waldron, among others. In 1990, Brown met the German-based ensemble Jazz Cussion for the first time. It was a fruitful encounter, which spawned the album Native Land in 1992 and a tour through Germany. After a break of several years without a release, the American alto saxophonist set off on an - for him - unusual path with the ensemble Jazz Cussion. Echoes Of Blue is Brown’s first (although it is hard to believe) purely standard album ranging between ballads and Latin classics. It's a professionally produced work, which lets his lyrical vein develop to its fullest. Reminisces of his mentors Duke Ellington (Prelude to a Kiss) und John Coltrane (Naima) are of course unavoidable. The musicians sketch light, airy outlines with virtuoso playing on guitar, double-bass, drums and percussion, which make the artistic encounter between Jazz Cussion and Marion Brown into a thoroughly delightful experience. Especially the exciting dialog between Brown’s saxophone and Michael Möhring’s guitar gives the pieces a deeper, poetic dimension. This creates the decisive element shaping this album, which makes it clear that they have something to tell each other. Alphonse Mouzon - The Man Incognito (1976)

Drummer Alphonse Mouzon recorded this Jazz funk masterpiece in 1976 backed by an almost encyclopaedical cast of musicians. The Man incognito may refer to the appearance of George Duke under a pseudo name, whose funky keyboards is a highlight throughout. ‘Snake Walk’ is a great punchy jazz funk dancer with great horn stabs and a real standout. ‘New York City’, ‘Without a Reason’, ‘Mouzon Moves On’ and ‘Dance Your Troubles Away’ are jazz funk with a capitol F. The more atmospheric ‘Before You Leave’ and the dynamic ‘Behind Your Mind’ add contrast to this lesser known, but substantial album. ~ Soul Brother Records. 

Smooth Jazz before it was called Smooth Jazz!
Great album by one of the best drummers of all time. Came out in 1976 before this type of music was called smooth jazz. Outstanding lineup of players: Tom Scott, Lee Ritenour, Ian Underwood, George Duke, Victor Feldman, Dave Grusin. Every song is really excellent with many great solos. Don't misunderstand my calling it smooth jazz there is plenty of fiery drumming by Alphonse and top notch playing by all musicians. One of his best. ~ Charles Demetri, Amazon.com.

Jesse van Ruller - Circles (2002)

Alluding to funk, soul, as well as a number of modern jazz styles, guitarist Jesse van Ruller's quartet functions in a space of its own making that is outside of any familiar category. Both difficult to define and hugely enjoyable, the music features a few significant characteristics. Despite the presence of the leader’s electric guitar and Sam Yahel’s Hammond B-3 organ, the band maintains an essentially traditional acoustic jazz sound. Further, van Ruller, Yahel, tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, and drummer Bill Stewart are all virtuosos who never try to show off or stand out. Although each of them is also a fine ensemble player, they nonetheless maintain a certain, individualistic distance from one another that gives the music a cerebral, somewhat detached feel. "One" is a bright, sketchy tune (Andrew Hill comes to mind) that impatiently presses ahead to solos by each band member. Displaying a full, twangy sound, the guitarist’s lines hurtle forward almost without pause, running parallel to the constant ping of Stewart’'s ride cymbal. Underlying dexterity similar to van Ruller's, Blake’s improvisation has a peevish quality, his high notes chafing against the composition’s structure and the rhythm section. For the most part Yahel fashions a solo out of smart melodic fragments and odd digressions. In the midst of a repeat of the head, Stewart blows over a vamp for about 30 seconds. Putting together flurries of strokes to every drum and cymbal, his calculated chaos swings in a rambling manner. Ruller's ballad "Here Comes The Sun" has the kind of melody that inspires lyric writers to make fresh observations about matters of the heart. Initially proceeding cautiously, as if fearful of disturbing the serenity, his solo gradually digs deeper, deftly maneuvering around Yahel’s brief chordal swells. Blake takes a more pronounced course, dramatically announcing his presence in the first few bars, then eventually working the upper register of the horn with beautifully executed cries that sound as if he’s searching for something that is, emotionally speaking, out of reach. The recording's standout track, Blake's "Black Dahlia," is a crafty, quasi-funk concoction (subtly driven by Stewart's abridged bugaloo beat) that sports a hummable melody, and regularly evolving into straight jazz time. At first seeming oblivious to Stewart's supple bursts of energy, Blake constructs another stunning solo, playing off of the drummer’s inflections, and progressively generating a density that becomes nearly claustrophobic. Expertly riding the straight-ahead swing of the organ and drums, van Ruller sounds positively bubbly, at first playing brief, economic phrases, then stretching out, integrating pregnant pauses into several brisk, climactic passages. ~ by David A. Luca Aquino - aQustico (2013)

Based upon his recorded offerings to date, one might get the impression that Italian trumpeter Luca Aquino has legendary Italian explorers' roots in his musical DNA. While Columbus, Vespucci and others took sail over uncharted waters, Aquino (which translates as "little water") sets off yet again and delivers aural riches with aQustico. In this engaging and intimate effort, Aquino, backed by a superb group consisting of accordion with rhythm section, explores extended musical textures and sends up an intriguing set of seven sonic portraits. Unlike some of his previous recordings, aQustico employs no electronic effects. This is an entirely acoustic exposition in which Aquino and crew are free to rely on their personal musical statements and their collective inter-communication. The repertoire consists primarily of elegantly simple melodies—primarily modal and scalar themes that are almost folk-like - followed by longer improvisations. Varied rhythmic interludes within each selection generate appropriate tension and resolve. Pacing is predominately balladic and beautiful ("Chet e Liz"). There are some smatterings of free improvisation ("Japan Pop") and little straight-ahead jazz. Aquino has a gorgeous trumpet and flugelhorn sound that resonates beauty and vulnerability - there's a child's voice singing in there. His improvisations, more melismatic than boppish, are lengthy ribbon-like explorations of tonality and they drip intimate expression ("Mastroianni," "Aqustico"). Some of his work here respectfully ghosts Chris Botti, Chet Baker and Miles Davis. The doubling of Aquino's horns with Carmine Ioanna's talented accordion and with Sade Mangiaracina's piano is just superb ("Aqustico"). Both Ioanna and Mangiaracina are highly involved in the tone-painting throughout and offer solos that reinforce the reserved, somewhat romantic nature of the selections ("La Ninna Nanna del Capitano"). Giorgio Vendola's bass is robust and Alessandro Marzi's percussion is as tasteful as what takes place around him ("Incerto"). Whether the genetics present in Luca Aquino are explorer-intensive or not, aQustico is a solid artistic vessel that leads the imagination to shores of beauty, riches and an abundance of joy. Dino Rubino - Where Is The Happiness? (2017)

Where Is The Happiness?
Question for which there is no human being who has not sought an answer. Philosophers, writers, painters, composers and above all the common man have come to terms with this unresolved question or with an answer that is sometimes so obvious that it does not deserve any consideration. This is what Dino Rubino wonders in his latest record published by Tùk Music and made with a highly respected crew that sees Emanuele Cisi on sax, Angelo Bonaccorso on French horn, Gaetano Cristofaro on clarinet, Giuseppe Mirabella on guitar, Paolino Dalla Porta on double bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums. The ten musical tracks that the pianist and trumpeter writes for this recording unfold on the trail of this answer, as well as an original version of “Sugar Man”, a famous piece by Sixto Rodriguez. Just as it is true that happiness is everywhere and at the same time nowhere, these pieces testify to Rubino's exploration of that musical metalanguage that knows no genre limit. In fact, there is a whole baggage of artistic experiences and listening in these pieces, from jazz to folk, rock, pop and classic repertoire, influences that, perfectly digested and reworked by Dino Rubino, emerge in different ways in these songs, almost to render concrete is the quote from Paolo Fresu that stands out in the booklet of the cd and that reads "Happiness is also not depriving oneself of anything". The pursuit of happiness in this music is something that has to do with an element of optimism and positivity, it proceeds through never dark atmospheres, on the contrary illuminated in the path by that light of spirituality that inevitably cheers. Dino Rubino wanted to add a literary equivalent to each of these passages, offering as many of his poems to be read in the booklet. Verses that do not describe, but rather suggest memories, images, stories that each of us has experienced at least once. Because happiness is never just a melody, but it is also word and vision, like that of the images that the Polish illustrator Joanna Gniady also offers to accompany this work. The opening "Joyful" is perfectly symmetrical to the "Happiness", which closes the disc: from joy, a euphoric but temporary condition of the spirit, to the awareness of a happiness that, however faint for all of us, reveals itself with a cyclical and regular rhythmic scan. As if to say that sometimes it goes away, but then it always comes back. And Dino Rubino dedicates this record to the "seekers of happiness", that is, to everyone, to that man who, at the center of the world, is also at the center of this music. ~ PianoSolo.it.

This album is dedicated in loving memory to George van Eps and Gene Harris with whom he played as a sideman on multiple albums, especially noted on the Concord label. It showcases the well-rounded expertise of 7-string jazz guitarist Ron Escheté as he explores 9 tunes ranging from jazz standards and contemporary compositions, including three of his own. Essentially the grouping revolves around a trio formation where Ron as the leader is backed by bassist Luther Hughes and drummers Jeff Hamilton (3 tracks) and Paul Kreibich (4 tracks). Overall, the album is quite a pleasant affair ideal for relaxation and worthy of multiple appraisals, whereby Ron's craftmanship can be further admired, Enjoy!

Trumpeter Jonah Jones became famous during 1956-57 performing nightly before dancing crowds at the Embers. In 1963, after a long string of albums, he finally had the opportunity to record live. Cut in Los Angeles at the Crescendo, Jones, pianist Andre Persiany, bassist John Brown and drummer Danny Farrar swing their way through nine standards, most of which Jones had recorded before. Such tunes as "It's All Right With Me," "From This Moment On," "Undecided" and "Lullaby of Birdland" receive melodic and shuffling treatment from this very popular (and now underrated) group. Ayako Hosokawa - Call Me (1979)

At the age of 14, Hosokawa already appeared in the clubs of the American barracks and Japanese jazz cafes with Kuranosuke Hamaguchi. In 1961 she moved to the USA. In the following years she toured on the West Coast before 1965 with Earl Hines in Las Vegas occurred, with whom she worked until 1967. In the mid-1970s, Hosokawa lived with her mother and daughter in San Francisco and recorded her debut album "No Tears" in 1977, in which she was part of the quartet of pianist Masaru Imada. This album and a longer tour marked the beginning of her new career in Japan. In 1977 the LP To "Mr. Wonderful" was also released, on which she sung pop and jazz standards. Accompanied by Toshiyuki Miyama's big band The New Herd, she recorded this album "Call Me" in 1979; highlights include "Love Is Here To Stay" and the Billy Joel's hit "Just The Way You Are".

Earl Klugh - Dream Come True (1980)

Earl Klugh's appealing guitar sound is well showcased on the album’s eight tracks. He contributes seven originals in addition to the Burt Bacharach, Hal David tune "Message to Michael", In today’s world most of these tunes could be considered high-quality background music, but going deeper the album is still an opportunity for Klugh to showcase his expertise. He is joined by a bunch of excellent rotating musicians including of merit; keyboardists Daryl Dybka and Greg Phillinganes and electric bassist Marcus Miller also makes an appearance. Overall, the album isn’t ground-breaking but a unique example of Jazz-Pop from the late seventies through to the early eighties.
